No. 17 Eagles Shutout Knights In Doubleheader
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The #17 Florida Gulf Coast University softball team shutout St. Michaels’s College as they swept the Purple Knights in doubleheader action Friday evening. The Eagles won the opener 8-0 and took the nightcap 3-0. With the two wins the Eagles are now 33-4 on the year, including 17 shutout victories.
In the first game, Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, FL) pitched nearly five perfect innings as she only allowed one hit. She struck out seven Purple Knight batters to improve to 15-2 this season. Junior Sarah Backe (Flossmoor, Illinois) came in to the game in the sixth inning and pitched a solid hitless inning to end the game and give the Eagles the win.
Freshman Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, FL) started off the scoring for the Eagles in the bottom of the first. With the count two and two, Jenks ripped a shot over the left field wall for her third homerun of the year. The homer is the first ever by a lead-off hitter for Florida Gulf Coast University softball.
The Eagles kept up the offensive pressure by scoring four more runs in the second. Junior Roz Tyre (Lake City, FL) started things out for the Eagles with a double to left. She advanced to third on a wild pitch by St. Michael’s Meggan Roberge. Junior Natasha Johnson (Ft. Pierce, FL) singled, scoring Tyre from third. Johnson picked up her third stolen base of the year as she advanced to second. With two outs, sophomore Christa Piquette (Barrington, Rhode Island) laid down a bunt to reach first. On the same play, an error by St. Michael’s third baseman, Katie Newland, allowed Johnson to score. With Piquette now on second, Jenks stepped into the box and jacked an RBI triple into center field. Senior Christine Beck (Hudson, FL) singled to right scoring Jenks, ending the offensive surge for the Eagles in the second.
Roz Tyre hit her first homerun of the year in the third inning, going 3-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored in the game. Natasha Johnson also had two RBI in game one of the doubleheader.
Game two featured Backe in the circle as she made her 12th appearance of the year. Backe pitched four shutout innings, only allowing four hits. She improves to a flawless 6-0 on the year. Freshman Dana Frantz (Brighton, MI) came in the game to pitch the last three innings. She allowed one hit while earning her second save of the season.
Jenks started the two run third inning with a hard hit single. Beck scored Jenks with a triple to center field. Junior Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, FL) reached base on an error by the shortstop that also scored Christine Beck.
The final Eagle run came from a bomb over the center field wall by Rouse. She now has eight homeruns on the year.
The Eagles host Southern Connecticut Saturday afternoon at 2 pm in another doubleheader.
