FGCU Softball Wins Record 26th Straight

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team extended its win streak to 26 consecutive games with two more wins Wednesday night. The wins came as they swept South Region opponent Lynn University 9-0 and 13-4 in doubleheader action. FGCU, which is now 43-4 overall and 10-3 in South Region play, broke the previous win streak mark of 25 set two seasons ago. In game one, junior Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, FL) pitched a four-hit complete game shutout with nine strikeouts to raise her record to 19-2. Edinger has won her last 17 decisions and has 12 shutouts this season. Junior Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, FL) smashed a three-run homer in the first inning to start the scoring for the Eagles. Rouse now has 13 homeruns this season. Junior Rachel Homan (Vero Beach, FL) had a breakout game in which she doubled, tripled and drove in three runs. Three other Eagles had two hits on the day. Freshman Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, FL) had two doubles while senior Christine Beck (Hudson, FL) and freshman LeeAnne McDowell (Arcadia, FL) both singled in game one. Freshman Melissa Geissler (Fort Myers, FL) started game two for the Eagles. She struck out four batters in three and one third innings to improve her record to 12-2. Junior Sarah Backe (Flossmoor, Ill.) came in the game to finish it out for FGCU. Lynn took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second, scoring on a couple of close plays at the plate. Rachel Foster drove in the first run with an RBI triple down the right field line and then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field. Meagan Osbourne drove in Danielle Curcio with an RBI single to take the early lead. The Eagles retook the lead in the top of the fourth, keyed by a two-run triple by sophomore Alicia Boyd (Naples, FL) and an RBI single by sophomore Lauren Barraco (North Fort Myers, FL). The six-run inning gave the Eagles an insurmountable 8-3 lead. In the bottom of the inning Lynn loaded the bases with one out on a couple of errors and a walk. Backe replaced Geissler in the circle and gave up a sacrifice fly to close the lead to 8-4. She struck out Lynn’s Jenna Piotrowski with runners on second and third to end the threat. Jenks hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth, giving her four homeruns on the year. Rouse added a two-run jack giving her 14 homeruns on the year and her second banger of the day. She now has a team leading and FGCU record 59 RBI on the season. Rachel Homan ended the scoring for the Eagles with a triple in which she scored when the relay throw went into the dugout. Jenks, Rouse, and Boyd each had two RBI for FGCU while Beck, McDowell, Homan, Barraco, and junior Natasha Johnson (Ft. Pierce, FL) all contributed one RBI. The Eagles travel to Fort Valley, Georgia on Friday to play in the J. E. Hawkins Memorial Tournament this weekend. FGCU battles Paine College (GA) and the host institution Fort Valley State on Friday afternoon. They play Claflin College (SC), Florida Tech, and Rollins College on Saturday.
