Wednesday, April 19, 2006
SAINT LEO, Fla – The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team traveled to Saint Leo University dropped a doubleheader this evening to the Lions by scores of 1-0 and 4-1 respectively. It was only the second time all season that the Eagles have been swept in a doubleheader. FGCU is now 55-7 on the season with two games left in the regular season. In game one the Eagles fell short in a pitching duel between Eagles’ junior ace Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) and Saint Leo’s Kiki Von Holt. Edinger pitched six solid shutout innings only to give up a game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out and runners on second and third, Saint Leo’s Monique Dominguez singled through the right side to record the game winning RBI. Edinger struck out 13 Lions batters only allowing four hits and one earned run in the game. Junior Rachel Homan (Vero Beach, Fla.) had two hits in the game while freshman LeeAnne McDowell (Arcadia, Fla.) and sophomore Alicia Boyd (Naples, Fla.) each recorded one hit. Homan also stole two bases in game one for the Eagles. Game two did not fare any better for the FGCU softball team. Saint Leo’s Katie Heintz recorded a no-hitter as the Lions took the game 4-1. The only Eagles run came unearned in the first inning when Homan reached on a walk and later scored on a fielding error by the catcher. Junior Sarah Backe (Flossmoor, Illinois) went two and two thirds innings giving up four hits and one run. Freshman Dana Frantz (Brighton, Michigan) came in relief in the third inning. The Lions batters scored three runs on five hits against Frantz, who drops to 8-1 on the season. The normally hot-hitting Eagles struggled against Saint Leo’s ace Heintz. In the complete game no-hitter, she struck out 10 batters and only gave up one walk. This marks the first game that the Eagles have been held hitless all season. FGCU had only three base runners the entire game. The Eagles are in action again Saturday as they conclude the regular season when they host Lynn in a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
