No. 21 Eagles Take Doubleheader Over Knights
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The 21st nationally ranked and 4th regionally ranked (57-7) Florida Gulf Coast University softball team (57-7) defeated Lynn University (24-23) in a doubleheader at the FGCU Softball Complex Saturday afternoon, 10-3 and 7-6 in 10 innings.
In game one, the Knights struck first with a homerun by junior Christina Rolla. The Eagles came back scoring five runs with junior Rachel Homan (Vero Beach, Fla.) led-off, hitting a single to right field. Senior Christine Beck (Hudson, Fla.) then stepped into the batter's box and hit a single up the middle, moving Homan to second. Freshman Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) hit her 11th double of the season to center field bringing home Homan to give the Eagles their first run. Sophomore Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, Fla.) was walked. Freshman LeeAnne McDowell (Arcadia, Fla. ) hit a single to left-field getting an RBI bringing home Beck. Natasha Johnson (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) hit a ball to left field that was dropped bringing home Jenks and Johnson.
In the third inning the Eagles scored five more runs starting with Natasha Johnson hitting a single up the middle and being brought home from a combined effort from Alisha Boyd’s sacrifice bunt and Beck’s sacrifice fly out. Junior Sarah Backe (Flossmoor, IL ) was hit by a pitch and Rachel Homan was walked. They were both brought home on a double to right field by Cheyenne Jenks, her second of the night. With a 8-1 the Eagles scored two more runs in the inning from a single to left field by junior Roz Trye (Lakeland, Fla.) bringing home Jenks. Freshman Rachel Holloway (Bokeelia, Fla.) came in the game as a pinch runner for Tyre and was brought home by Hillary Johnson, who hit a double to center field.
The Knights scored two more runs in the fourth inning off of a triple by sophomore Alicia Byrd (Boca Raton, Fla.).
Game two came down to the wire in the bottom of the 10th inning. The Knights were up 4-2 after a two-run homerun by junior Christina Rolla. With the tie breaker rule, Jenks started on second base. McDowell hit a single up the middle bringing home Jenks to pull the Eagles within one, 4-3. McDowell was caught stealing but Natasha Johnson was walked by the Knights pitcher Candice Vanderveen. Boyd hit a single to right field and Holloway walked. Tyre then followed with a game-winning single up the middle to score Boyd and Johnson.
Natasha Johnson and Jenks both hit solo home runs in game two. Jenks hit hers in inning one and Johnson in inning six to help tie the game.
The Eagles were led in the circle by sophomore pitcher Rachael Edinger (25-4). Edinger pitched six innings with 13 strikeouts, one walk, three runs and three hits. She leads the Eagles in strikeouts this year with 256 in 194 innings pitched.
The winning pitcher in game two was freshman Melissa Geissler (Fort Myers, Fla.). Geissler came in for the Eagles in the third inning pitching the last seven. She had four strikeouts and allowed only two runs and four hits. Geissler is now 13-2 for the season and has 73 strikeouts in 97 innings pitched this year.
The Eagles await a likely bid to the NCAA South Regionals, to be held May 11-14 at a campus sites to be announced.
