No. 25 Eagles Ranked No. 5 In South Region Poll

Fort Myers, Fla. – The NCAA Division II Softball Committee has released this week's Division II softball regional rankings with No. 25 Florida Gulf Coast University slipping in the poll at fifth place with a 57-7 overall record. The South Region leader is Florida Southern who holds a 49-5 overall record. Barry University follows behind Southern in second place with a 37-11 overall record. These are the final rankings for the South Region poll and will stand for the selections into the national tournament this weekend. The Eagles are ranked fifth in the nation in winning percentage with a .891 and in earned runs average at .91. They’re also ranked No. 25 as a team ranked in home runs per game and No. 22 in the nation in triples per game. The Eagles finished their season batting .330 as a team and the pitching staff struck out their opponents 423 times. Several players are nationally ranked as individuals in statistics including two Eagles pitchers. Sophomore Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) and junior Sarah Backe (Flossmoor, Illinois) made the list. Edinger stands No. 10 nationally in wins with 25 and sixth in the nation in Earned Run Average at 0.61. Edinger is also ranked No. 16 in strikeouts per innings at 9.2. Backe is nationally ranked in saves with three and is No. 14 in Earned Run Average at 0.89. Other Eagles who currently stand nationally ranked in statistics include junior Rachel Homan (Vero Beach, Fla.), who is No. 22 in the nation in stolen bases with 0.66 per game. Junior Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.) is No. 13 in the nation in home runs per game with 0.32 , ranked No. 17 in slugging percentage at .850 and No. 19 in runs batted in per game average of 1.18. Senior Christine Beck (Hudson, Fla.) is No. 26 in the nation in triples per game at 0.11. The top eight teams in each region at the end of the season receive bids to the 64-team national championship tournament. The regional tournaments are scheduled for May 11-14 at campus sites to be determined. FGCU, which became a full-fledged member of the NCAA in 2004-05, may receive its first NCAA tournament bid this Sunday May 7 as selections will be announced.
