Softball Opens Day Two of Barry Invitational With Win

MIAMI SHORES, Fla., - The FGCU Softball team opened the second day of the Barry Invitational with a 4-2 win over West Florida. Rachel Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) picked up her fifth win of the year, scattering four hits in seven innings to improve to 5-0 on the year. Edinger struck out seven batters in the game. The Eagles immediately took a lead in the game as Rachael Homan (Vero Beach, Fla.) led off with a walk. Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) and Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) each singled allowing Homan to score. In the second, Jessica Gary (Naples, Fla.) stole a pair of bases to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. FGCU added a pair of runs in the third following a pair of West Florida errors. Carmen Paez, Cheyenne Jenks and Desiree Miller each went 2-for-4 in the game for the Eagles. Jenks and Paez scored runs for the Eagles. The Argonauts made the game interesting in the bottom of the seventh. After an FGCU error, Valerie Staub tripled to score UWF’s first run. After loading the bases, West Florida added a second run on a wild pitch. Edinger was able to get out of the jam when Whitney Gay popped up to end the game. The Eagles will be in action again at 7:00 pm in the Barry Invitational when they face Lynn.
