Wednesday, February 28, 2007
FORT MYERS, Fla., - The FGCU Softball team won its 10th straight game with a doubleheader sweep of Mercyhurst (4-0/5-1). The Eagles are now 18-2 while Mercyhurst falls to 3-5. In the first game, the Eagles scored all they would need in the bottom of the second inning. Natasha Johnson (Fort Pierce, Fla.) started the inning and Jessica Gary (Naples, Fla.) followed with a single of her own. After an error, Roz Tyre (Lake City, Fla.) doubled to drive in a run. Later in the inning, Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.) singled home to score two more for the Eagles, giving FGCU a 4-0 lead. That would be all Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) would need to pick up her eighth win of the year. Edinger struck out eight batters while scattering six hits to move to 8-0 on the year. In the second game, the second inning was again the key inning for the Eagles as they plated five runs in the home frame. The first three Eagles reached base as Mercyhurst committed three errors in the inning while FGCU added three hits to account for the five runs. Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) retired the first 12 batters she faced before allowing the first base runner in the fifth with a leadoff single. Frantz would work six innings and allow a pair of hits to improve to 9-2 on the year. The Eagles will be in action again on Friday when they host CW Post at 5:00 pm in their first game of the 2007 FGCU Spring Break Tournament.
