21st Ranked Softball Team Improves to 36-3

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The 21st ranked FGCU softball team won its 17th straight game with a doubleheader sweep of North Georgia College & State on Wednesday evening. The Eagles improve to 36-3 while the Saints fall to 17-10. Game one saw FGCU win in dramatic fassion. The Saints took a 1-0 lead into the seventh, courtesy of a Laura Voyles solo homer in the third inning. Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, Fla.) led off the inning with a single to the right side. After a sacrifice bunt by Alisha Boyd (Naples, Fla.), Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) came to the plate with two outs and delivered a two-run walk-off homer to lift the Eagles to their 16th straight win. Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) picked up her 17th straight win of the year, improving to 17-0. Edinger fanned nine batters while scattering four hits and one earned run. Jenks hit her sixth homer of he year to lift FGCU to the win. In the second game, the Saints scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning, courtesy of an FGCU error and five hits. The Eagles got one run back in their half of the inning as Jessica Gary (Naples, Fla.) led off the inning with a walk and stole second base. Gar scored on a Natasha Johnson (Fort Pierce, Fla.) RBI single. FGCU knotted the score after a double by Johnson scored a pair of runs. FGCU loaded the bases in the sixth with one out and took the lead on Jessica Rouse’s (Jacksonville, Fla.) grand slam, her 10th homer of the year. Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) picked up the win, going the distance for her 16th win of the year. She allowed seven hits while striking out four batters. Rouse went 2-for-4 including the game winning homer in the sixth. The Eagles will be in action again on Friday when they host Edinboro at 5:00 pm at the FGCU Softball Complex.
