Softball Rolls to 49th Win of the Year

CARROLLTON, Ga., - The #8 FGCU softball team ran its record to 49-4 with a doubleheader sweep of West Georgia on Monday afternoon. FGCU took game one 13-5 and the second game 7-2. The Eagles jumped out to early lead in game one and continued to build on it. Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) hit her 20th homer of the season in the top of the first inning. The Wolves answered with a single run of their own in their half of the first. Candice Brown led off with a double and scored on a Mary Carlisle single. The Eagles answered with three more in the top of the third and a pair of runs in he fourth to take a 7-2 lead. Rachael Homan (Vero Beach, Fla.) singled and stole second to lead off the third. She and Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) scored on a Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.) single. The Eagles again used the long-ball to score in the fourth, this time, Alisha Boyd (Naples, Fla.) led off the inning with a solo shot. FGCU tacked on five in the top of the seventh. Paez delivered the big blow in the inning with a two-run shot, her second of the game and 21st of the year. The Eagles withstood a rally from West Georgia in their half of the inning, surrendering three runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning before taking game one 13-5. Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) picked up the win to remain a perfect 23-0 on the year. Paez was 2-for-2 with a pair of homers while she scored four times in the game. Rouse and Boyd were each 3-for-4 in the game. The Eagles had chances to score in the first, second and fourth innings, but could not put runs on the board until the fifth when they finally broke through with four. Jessica Gary (Naples, Fla.) led off the inning and stole second. With two outs and Gary on third, Homan singled to score the first run. Jenks singled, giving the Eagles runners at the corners with two outs, bringing Paez up to bat. She then drilled her 22nd homer of the season, and third of the day, to lift FGCU to a 4-0 lead. The Wolves answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning with some help from FGCU. The Eagles committed a pair of errors in the inning contributing to the two runs for West Georgia. Behind a two RBI double from Natasha Johnson (Fort Pierce, Fla.), the Eagles scored three more runs in the top of the seventh, to take a 7-2 lead. After a leadoff single, Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) retired the side to coast to her 23rd win of the year. She scattered six hits while fanning six batters and allowing a pair of runs, one earned. The Eagles will be back in action again on Wednesday April, 11 when they travel to St. Leo for a doubleheader at 5:00 pm.
