Saturday, April 14, 2007
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The #7 FGCU softball team cruised to an easy 10-0 win in game one of a doubleheader against and held on for a 3-2 win to complete a sweep of Lynn. The Eagles improve to 52-4 on the year while Lynn falls to 13-31 on the year. The Eagles started the scoring with a pair of runs in the second inning, as a pair of doubles by Desiree Miller (Hartville, Ohio) and Natasha Johnson (Fort Pierce, Fla.) led to two runs. That would prove to be enough run support for Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) who improved to 25-0 while throwing her ninth shutout of the year and 25th complete game. Edinger scattered five hits and allowed one walk while striking out six. However, the Eagles were not done scoring. The Eagles jumped all over the Knights in the third and fourth innings, scoring eight runs to open a 10-0 lead. Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.) drilled her 12th homer of the year, a three-run shot in the third. Miller added a two-run single in the fourth to help FGCU open the lead. Rouse scored three runs and drove in four on the day while Natasha Johnson added three RBI for the Eagles. Game two saw FGCU score single runs in the first, third and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead. Rachael Homan (Vero Beach, Fla.) doubled to leadoff the game and Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) brought her home on a single. Homan then drilled a leadoff homer over the left field fence giving FGCU a 2-0 lead. In the third, the Eagles added what would prove to be the winning run on a single by LeeAnne McDowell (Arcadia, Fla.) that scored pinch-runner Christa Piquette (Barrington, R.I.). The Knights finally got on the board in the fifth inning and again in the seventh when the game got interesting. The Knights used a walk and back-to-back singles to load the bases with two outs. Senior Heather Tucker forced a walk to score Dani Curcio from third and allow the LU three-hole hitter Candace VanderVeen the opportunity for a walk-off hit. VanderVeen took a 2-2 pitch into the gap in left center, but was robbed of the game-winning RBI as Eagles left fielder Jessica Rouse made a spectacular diving catch to seal the victory. FGCU starter Dana Frantz (Howell, Mich.) earned the win, her 23rd of the season, going 6.2 innings before Edinger came in to pick up her 4th save of the season. Homan was 2-for-3 with a homerun and a double while scoring a pair of runs. The Eagles are in action again on Tuesday when they travel to Barry for a doubleheader at 5:00 pm.
