Eagles Fall To Illini 8-4 In Final Game of USF Tourney
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Eagles dropped their final game of the USF Wilson Tournament 8-4 to Illinois on Sunday morning. The Eagles finished their opening weekend of play 2-3. Third baseman Cheyenne Jenks finished the day 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while second baseman Samantha Waldron went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Overall the Eagles collected five hits in the game, including doubles from Roz Tyre (Lake City, Fla.) and Jenks (Naples, Fla.). In the circle, righthander Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) suffered her first loss of the season. Frantz pitched 4.0 innings, allowing eight hits and giving up four runs. Illinois pitcher, Claire DeVreese, took a two-hit shutout into the sixth before surrendering a pair of runs to the Eagles. FGCU had threatened in the fifth with runners at second and third and no outs, but DeVreese tossed back-to-back strikeouts before getting a routine grounder to end the inning.
Illinois got on the board in the second inning after first baseman Katrina Ross reached first on an error then scored on Pinchback's two-run blast that dented the scoreboard behind the rightfield wall.
Mexicano put the Illini up 4-0 on her two-run shot in the third. Zymkowitz slapped a single over the head of the centerfielder for triple before Mexicano took a 3-2 pitch deep over the leftfield wall.
Illinois added to its lead after Zymkowtitz led off the fifth with a bunt single then stole second and scored on rightfielder Hope Howell's triple down the rightfield line. Howell crossed the plate on Mexicano's RBI-single to make it 6-0.
The Eagles battled back in the top of the sixth, scoring a pair of runs on a double by Jenks and a single by Waldron (Plant City, Fla.). FGCU cut Illinois' lead to four with two more runs on a Jenks single in the top of the seventh, but Illini pitcher Ashley Wright ended the Eagles' rally with grounder to third.
The Eagles return to the field next weekend when they head back to USF to participate in the USF Wilson Tournament from Feb. 16-18. FGCU's first game of the tourney will be Feb. 16 at 9:30 am when they take on Mississippi.
