FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team will make its second straight trip to Tampa this weekend as they get set to compete in the USF Wilson Tournament. The Eagles head into this weekend’s action with a record of 2-3 with wins over Bethune-Cookman and South Florida. FGCU begins its tournament play Saturday, Feb. 16 with doubleheader action against Mississippi and Tennessee starting at 9:30 a.m. against Ole Miss followed by a 4:30 p.m. matchup with the Volunteers.

Ole Miss comes with a record of 3-1 after three straight victories to open the season. After consecutive wins over Middle Tennessee, Tennessee Tech, and Georgetown, the Rebels fell to Kennesaw State by a score of 3-0 in the final day of the Kennesaw State Classic. In the circle the Rebels are led by Lindsey Perry and Tara Willitt. Perry has a record of 2-0 this season, going the distance in both wins. With an ERA of 0.93, 15 strikeouts in 15 innings, and an opponent’s average of .146, Perry is already establishing herself as a dominate pitcher. Willitt has a record of 1-1 with one complete game and an impressive ERA of 0.72. On offense Ole Miss is led by Ashley Dowdy who is hitting .455 with two doubles, three RBI’s, and three runs scored.

Tennessee comes into this weekend’s action ranked #5 in the ESPN/USA Today poll after an impressive 5-0 start to the season. The Vols have outscored their opponents 34-3 in five victories over Utah State, UC-Davis, Oregon, Cal Poly, and Oregon State. Tennessee is led by a dominating pitching staff that includes Ashton Ward, Danielle Pieroni, and Megan Rhodes. Ward has a record of 3-0, including two complete games, an era of 0.00, and an opponent’s batting average of .093. Jennifer Lapicki is hitting .313 with two homers and five runs batted in.

Dana Frantz looks to anchor the pitching staff this weekend for the Eagles. She comes in with a record of 2-1 with two complete games and an era of 1.94. Offensively Cheyenne Jenks leads the way for FGCU while hitting .312 with a home run and six RBI’s.
