Eagles Sweep Day Three of Spring Break Invite to Win Tournament Title

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU softball team won a trio of games on the final day of the FGCU Spring Break Invitational. The Eagles scored 20 runs on the day and defeated SDSU, Boston College and St. Bonaventure.

The Eagles are now 12-5 on the season and have won eight consecutive games.

The Eagles handed South Dakota State an 11-0 loss in their first game of the day. Senior Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) and junior LeeAnne McDowell both went 1-for-1 with a homerun and two RBI's. Roz Tyre (Lake City, Fla.) finished 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI’s. Amanda Leiter (Naples, Fla.) also had a solid game at the dish, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI’s. Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) picked up her fourth win of the season, going all 5.0 innings while giving up four hits and striking out three batters.

FGCU knocked off Boston College, 8-0, in their second game of the day. Carmen Paez went 1-for-3 and blasted her second homerun of the day. Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) had a double and a triple, while Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla.) finished 2-for-3 with one RBI. Morgan Campen (Rougemont, N.C.) picked up her third win of the season, pitching 7.0 innings. Campen racked up six strikeouts and only gave up two hits to the visiting Eagles.

In the final game of the tourney, FGCU knocked off St. Bonaventure 1-0. The game was tied until the bottom of the fourth inning. The Eagles started the bottom of the fourth inning with a Carmen Paez triple to right center field. Jenks stepped up next and would slap a single up the middle to bring in C. Paez for the game-winning run. Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) picked up the win (her fifth of the season). Edinger went 7.0 innings with five strikeouts.

The Eagles will be in action on Feb. 26 when they host a double-header against St. Bonaventure. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m.
