Campen, Paez Take Home Pitcher, Player of the Week
MACON, Ga. – Florida Gulf Coast pitcher Morgan Campen wasted little time making an impact for the Eagles. The freshman won three games over the weekend to lead Florida Gulf Coast to a 7-0 record at its Spring Break Invitational, earning her the title of Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week, the second week in a row that an Eagle has taken home the award. Her teammate, Carmen Paez, did her part at the plate, providing plenty of run support. Paez drove in 10 runs and belted three home runs throughout the week on her way to the A-Sun Player of the Week award, the conference announced Monday.
Campen, a criminal forensics and criminal justice major from Rougemont, N.C., notched her first career win and shutout in a 12-0 win over SDSU. She went all 7.0 innings while striking out eight batters and giving up one hit. Her second win of the season came in a 5-2 win over Western Carolina as she went 7.0 innings and totaled nine strikeouts. In her final outing of the Florida Gulf Coast Spring Break Invitational, Campen picked up her second shutout of the weekend by blanking Boston College 8-0. Campen pitched 7.0 innings, racked up six strikeouts and only gave up two hits to the visiting Eagles. For the week, Campen finished 3-0 with a 0.33 ERA and 23 strikeouts. She also pitched two shutouts and only gave up six hits in her three games in the circle.
Paez, a senior criminal justice major from Bell Glade, Fla., hit at a .467 clip for the Eagles during the week while slugging 1.267. Besides her three long balls, Paez walked 10 times and recorded a double and a triple. Her triple allowed her to score the winning run in the final game of the Florida Gulf Coast Spring Break Invitational, a 1-0 triumph over St. Bonaventure on Sunday.
