Eagles Sweep St. Bonaventure
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU softball team completed with a two-game sweep of St. Bonaventure on Tuesday at the FGCU Softball Complex. The Eagles won game one, 3-2, and game two 5-0.
With the wins, FGCU advances 14-5 on the season and a perfect 9-0 at home. St. Bonaventure drops to 1-7 overall.
FGCU used late game heroics from freshman LeAnne McDowell (Arcadia, Fla.) to defeat the Bonnies in game one of the double header.
In the bottom of the sixth with the score tied 2-2, Jessica Gary (Naples, Fla.) singled by beating out a throw by the third baseman. McDowell pinch hit for Christa Piquette (Barrington, R.I.) and doubled to left center field to bring in Gary for the winning run.
Rachael Edinger picked up the win after going 7.0 innings, allowing three hits and striking out six. Edinger is now 6-1 on the season.
FGCU took control early in game two by scoring two runs in the bottom of the second and third innings, while holding the Bonnies scoreless.
Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) led the second inning off by being hit by a pitch. Desiree Miller (Hartville, Ohio) then singled up the middle and Jenks advanced to second base. Sam Waldron then came up and reached base on a fielder’s choice, Jenks advanced to third base on the fielder’s choice and Miller was thrown out at second. Next, McDowell stepped in and doubled to right center to score Jenks. Waldron was thrown out at home and Alisha Boyd struck out swinging to end the inning.
The excitement of the night was provided by Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) in the bottom of the third inning. Paez stepped into the batter’s box with two outs and blasted a homerun to dead center field to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. The home run was her eighth of the year.
The Eagles went on to score one run in the fifth innings and two runs in the sixth inning to win by the final score of 5-0.
Morgan Campen picked up her fourth win of the season. She pitched 7.0 innings, gave up five hits and struck out six.
The Eagles continue their homestand on Thursday, Feb. 28 with a doubleheader against Mount Saint Mary. The first game is slated for a 5 p.m. start.
