FGCU to Participate in Miken Invitational
FORT MYERS, Fla. – After winning back-to-back home tournaments over the last two weeks, the FGCU softball team will look for another title this weekend. FGCU will travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to participate in the Miken Invite.
FGCU (23-6) heads to Boca Raton having won 19 of its last 20 games after starting the season 4-5. The Eagles' pitching staff has been dominant to this point in the season. Freshman Morgan Campen (Rougemont, N.C.) is 7-1 with a 1.21 ERA, senior Racheal Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) is 9-2 with an ERA of 1.45 and junior Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) is 7-3 with a 2.69 ERA. Offensively, the Eagles are led by Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) and Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.). Paez is hitting .405 with 11 homeruns and 36 RBI’s, while Jenks is batting .378 with a team-high three triples.
Southeast Missouri State will be the Eagles’ forst opponent on Friday, at 9 a.m. The Otahkians (7-5) have been on an offensive roll recently, scoring 23 runs in its last three games. FGCU will face Eastern Illinois at 11 a.m. on Friday. The Panthers (3-4) won two of three games at the Chattanooga Frost Classic last weekend.
Saturday, the Eagles will face Bethune-Cookman at 11 a.m. and FAU at 6 p.m. Bethune Cookman finished fourth last weekend at the Miken Classic. The Owls defeated Illinois 3-2 to win the Miken Classic Championship last weekend. Melissa Moore was named Tournament MVP. Moore hit .333 and had a fielding percentage of 1.000 for the weekend. FAU head coach Joan Joyce enters the weekend two wins away from 600 career victories. Towson (4-5) by senior outfielder Nina Navarro, rounds out the tournament field.
Sunday, FGCU could play at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. depending on their record through the first four games of the tourney.
