Softball Sweeps Day 1 of the Miken Classic

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team improved its record to 25-6 on Friday after a pair of wins over Southeast Missouri State and Eastern Illinois at the FAU Miken Classic. The Eagles defeated SEMO in game one by a score of 5-0 and EIU by a score of 2-1 in game two.

In game one, senior Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) got the win while going the distance, allowing no runs on four hits. Edinger also registered six strikeouts. Sam Waldron (Plant City, Fla.) led the way offensively for the Eagles going 3-4 with two RBI’s and one run scored. Desiree Miller (Hartville, Ohio) and Jessica Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) finished 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively.

In game two, the Eagles got on the board first in the bottom of the fifth when Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla.) singled and on a throwing error by the shortstop Amanda Leiter (Naples, Fla.) scored and Platt advanced to second base.

Up 1-0 going into the sixth inning, Morgan Campen was replaced in the circle by Edinger. Edinger stepped in but gave up a run in the top of the seventh inning and sent the game into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Edinger stepped up and sat down the first three batters she faced. The Eagles would then load the bases in the bottom of the inning after EIU walked J. Paez and Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.). Cheyenne Jenks stepped into the batter's box and hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Jessica Gary to give the Eagles the 2-1 win.

Edinger picked up her eleventh win of the season while pitching 3.0 innings and racking up four strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they battle Bethune-Cookman in game one of a double-header at 11 a.m. followed by match-up with FAU at 6 p.m.
