FGCU Defeats Belmont in Game One Before Rain Stops Night Game
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In double-header action, the Eagles held off a late surge by the Bruins in game one to win, 10-7, before BU worked on another come back in game two, coming within one run, 4-3, before the game was halted due to heavy rain.
Game one started slowly with both teams putting a single run across the plate in the second inning. In the bottom of the third, the Bruins took the lead. Freshman Julie Harmon fired up the BU offensive effort with a hard single to the shortstop and a steal. A single up the middle by junior Sammi Parks moved Harmon into scoring position. Parks grabbed her first stolen base of the season before sophomore Erin Gier reached on a FGCU fielding error and helped Harmon and Parks over the plate to give Belmont the 3-1 lead. The Eagles added one run in the top of the fourth before the Bruins tacked on three more runs in their half of the same inning. A bunt by senior Angie Helseth moved sophomore Sara Bentley, who reached on a walk, to second base before another FGCU error moved the pair into scoring position. A single by senior Meghan Pipkin and a sacrifice bunt by Harmon sent them home for two more runs for Belmont. Finally, a sacrifice bunt by senior Jes McMillian scored sent Pipkin over the plate to put BU on top, 6-2.
Florida Gulf Coast fired back in the top of the fifth inning, picking up three runs courtesy of back-to-back homeruns by Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) and Jessica Paez )Belle Glade, Fla.), to close the gap to one, 6-5. In BU’s half of the inning, Gier got things started with a triple, her first of the season, deep to left before a sacrifice bunt by senior Mandy Stanley sent her over the plate. The Eagles then went on a tear in the sixth, piling on five runs. A pitching change down the stretch for FGCU helped keep the Bruins from getting back in the game and the Eagles went on to take the game, 10-7.
FGCU is expected to return to action on Sunday afternoon to complete the series with Belmont. Game time has yet to be determined.
