Softball Sweeps a Pair of A-Sun Games on Make-up Day
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - After rain and darkness halted a game in each of its weekend doubleheaders, the FGCU softball team (40-8, 8-0 A-Sun) was finally able to resume action on Sunday. The Eagles rallied and went on defeat Belmont 5-4 before picking up their seventh consecutive victory, when they defeated Lipscomb 13-2 in five innings.
FGCU's game with the Eagles was halted midway through the fifth inning with FGCU ahead, 4-3 (Mar. 29). When action resumed, the Bruins had two runners on base but were unable to get one over the plate to tie the score. A strong defensive effort by Belmont kept FGCU from adding a run in the top of the sixth before an error helped the Bruins knot the game at four. In the top of the seventh inning, leadoff batter Jessica Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) homered to help the Eagles regain the one run lead, 5-4, and Belmont was unable to put together another rally and fell by the same score.
The rain delayed conclusion to the A-Sun Series of the week ended well for the Eagles who defeated the Lipscomb Bison 13-2 in five innings at Draper Diamond Sunday morning.
The Eagles scored 11 runs in the top of the first inning to put the pressure on Lipscomb. FGCU got homeruns from Jessica Paez (two-run HR), Roz Tyre (Grand-Slam HR) and Carmen Paez (three-run HR). FGCU would go on to add runs in the third and fourth innings and won by the final of 13-2 in five innings.
The Eagles will be in action again on Wednesday, April 2 when they travel to Miami, Fla. to face Florida International in double-header action. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m.
