Softball Picks Up 300th Win, Then Knocks Off No. 25 Mississippi State
HONOLULU – The FGCU softball team opened up the Malihini tournament at the University of Hawaii with a pair of wins on Thursday, each involving a milestone of sorts. The 2-1 victory over Oregon State was the 300th in the program’s history, while the 8-3 win over Mississippi State was just the second time the Eagles have knocked off a nationally-ranked opponent in school history.
In game one against Oregon State, the Eagles and Beavers struggled to put runs on the board, with the game remaining scoreless through the first five innings. In the top of the sixth, Jessica Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) doubled with one out and Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) followed with a walk, putting runners on first and second. After Samantha Waldron (Plant City, Fla.) grounded into a fielder’s choice, Jessica Carter (Ocala, Fla.) drove a double into the left-center field gap, scoring both Paez and Waldron, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead. The Beavers would come back with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but Cat McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla.) was able to shut down the rally and preserve the one-run lead in the seventh inning as well, earning her 10th victory in her 10th start.
In the second game, the Eagles took on No. 25 Mississippi State. This time the Eagles’ bats would not be held in check. Jessica Paez connected for a two-run homer in the top of the first, giving FGCU an early 2-0 lead. After the Bulldogs put up a run in the first and two more in the second to take a one-run lead, the Eagles put up a four spot in the fourth, highlighted by a three-run shot off the bat of Desiree Miller (Hartville, Ohio). Cheyenne Jenks added a couple insurance runs with a 2-run home run in the fifth, her 10th of the year. Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) earned her sixth win of the season, pitching a complete game and allowing just one earned run while striking out four.
The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow evening as they take on the host Hawaii Wahine at midnight eastern time.
