#23 Eagles Sweep Day 1 of USF Under Armour Showcase
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The No. 23 FGCU softball team opened up the USF Under Armour Showcase at the Eddie C Moore Complex with a pair of wins on Friday, extending their winning streak to 19 games.
FGCU defeated Ball State in game one, 6-5 in eight innings. The Cardinals got on the board first when Lisa Rozanski scored off a wild pitch.
Both teams would play scoreless ball until the Eagles put up a four spot in the bottom of the fifth inning, thanks to big hits from Jessica Carter (Ocala, Fla.), Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla.), Desiree Miller (Hartville, Ohio), and Lindsey Green (Bowling Green, Ky.).
With FGCU leading 4-1, the Cardinals responded by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Ball State would take a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth inning when Elizabeth Milian singled down the right field line to score Alicia Barkley.
FGCU responded and quickly put an end to the end the game as Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) singled to left field to score Jessica Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.), tying the game at 5-5. Carter would step up and single to left field, scoring Jenks to give the Eagles the 6-5 win. Carter, who finished the game 2-for-5, has now had three game-winning hits in FGCU's last eight games.
Cassidy Rash (Crystal River, Fla.) picked up her sixth win of the season, pitching only one inning and allowing one hit.
Lauran Ziegler (Palm Bay, Fla.) was 3-for-4 in the game with a run scored, while Miller finished 2-for-4 with a RBI.
In game two, the Eagles defeated Indiana 7-5 to improve to 27-4 on the season.
The Eagles jumped on the Hoosiers early as they scored five runs through the first three innings. FGCU went on to add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth as they held off IU and picked up their 19th consecutive victory.
Waldron went 3-for-4 with a homerun and a four RBI.
Senior Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) picked up her eighth win of the season. Frantz pitched 5.1 innings, giving up seven hits and striking out three. Rash picked up her second collegiate save in the win, pitching 1.2 innings and only allowing one hit.
The Eagles continue play in the USF Under Armour Showcase on Saturday with a pair of games. First up is Hofstra at 11 a.m., followed by a game against BYU at 4 p.m.
