Late Game Heroics Lead #23 Eagles to a Day 2 Sweep at the USF Under Armour Showcase
CLEARWATER, Fla. - In the first game, Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) hit a three-run homer with two outs in the seventh inning to give Florida Gulf Coast a dramatic 3-2 win over Hofstra. The Pride took a 2-0 lead on a two-run single with two outs from sophomore Laura Valentino in the second inning. The lead held as senior pitcher Kayleigh Lotti took the shutout into the seventh.
FGCU got its first two runners on in the seventh inning, as Hayley O’Mara (Naples, Fla.) drew a walk and Lauran Ziegler (Palm Bay, Fla.) singled. Lotti then got the next two Eagle batters out, before Jenks, who came into the game hitting .494 with 14 homers on the season, was able to get a hold of a full count pitch and give the Eagles their first lead of the game.
Michele DePasquale reached on a two-out error in the bottom of the seventh, but third baseman Sara Michalowski flew out to end the game.
Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) picked up the win. Frantz pitched 7.0 innings, surrendering five hits, and striking out five batters.
In the second game, BYU jumped ahead of FGCU with three runs in the top of the third inning. Angeline Quiocho brought in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in the first run of the game. Back-to-back singles from Jessica Purcell and Andrea Ramirez brought in two runs, before a line out ended the scoring rally.
After holding FGCU scoreless through five innings, an error on the catcher brought in Ziegler for the first Eagles run and Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla.) stepped up with a 1-1 count and blasted a grand slam to left center field to give the Eagles the 5-3 lead.
In the top of the seventh inning Andrea Ramirez hit a ground ball to bring in a run, cutting the deficit within one. The Cougar comeback fell short as Alexis Casey (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) struck out the final batter to end the game to earn her first save.
Cassidy Rash (Crystal River, Fla.) picked up her seventh win on the season, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing only four hits.
The Eagles finish play in the USF Under Armour Showcase on Sunday with a game against nationally-ranked UMass. The first pitch is set for 10 a.m.
