No. 19 Eagles Sweep FIU
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The No. 19 Eagles avenged an earlier loss to FIU and held the Golden Panthers to one run on Wednesday night in a 3-0 and 4-1 doubleheader sweep.
With the sweep, FGCU improves to 42-6 overall, while FIU falls to 24-24. The Eagles are now 2-3 all-time against FIU.
FGCU scored in the bottom of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Desiree Miller (Hartville, Ohio) to take a 1-0 lead.
In the third inning, the Eagles tacked on two more with a two-run home run by Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) to push the lead to 3-0.
Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla.) pitched a complete game shutout, her sixth of the season, while striking out five and only giving up three hits. McDaniel is now a perfect 19-0 on the season.
In game two, the Eagles got back-to-back two-out RBI doubles from Jenks and Samantha Waldron (Plant City, Fla.) to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Jessica Landau scored FIU’s lone run on the day when she belted her third home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
FGCU got the run back in the bottom half of the fourth inning on a home run by Waldron to put the Eagles ahead 3-1.
After back-to-back singles in the bottom of the fifth for the Eagles, FIU’s Jennifer Gniadek relieved Ashley McClain. She then walked the next two batters including a free pass to Jenks with the bases loaded to score another run. Gniadek then got the next two batters to strike out swinging to end the inning down 4-1.
Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) picked up her 12th win of the season after pitching 5.0 innings and giving up three hits. Morgan Campen (Rougemont, N.C.) relieved Frantz in the sixth inning and threw two innings while only giving up one hit to pick up her first save of the season.
The No. 19 FGCU softball team will return to A-Sun Conference action on Saturday, April 18 against Campbell. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m.
