Thursday, March 18, 2010

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team lost to Drake University Thursday night, 4-1, at the FGCU Softball Complex. Hayley O’Mara (Naples, Fla.) picked up two hits in three at bats, but the Eagles offense never got off the ground, collecting just three hits as a team. With the loss, the Eagles fall to 11-15 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 16-6.

Elena Leon led off the game with a solo home run to dead center field, staking Drake to an early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs would string together three more hits in the top of the first, scoring once more to take a 2-0 advantage.

The Eagles answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, despite not recording a hit. Lauran Ziegler (Palm Bay, Fla.) started the inning by reaching first on a dropped third strike. Three batters later, Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla.) hit a fly ball to center field that was dropped by Macie Silliman, allowing Ziegler to score (2-1).

A two-out single from Torey Craddock scored Leon with Drake’s third run, giving the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead in the second inning.

After Kelci Breaux (Okeechobee, Fla.) relieved Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla.) to start the fifth inning, three of the first four batters singled, resulting in another run for Drake (4-1).

The Blue and Green couldn’t mount any threat of a comeback, earning just one base runner over the final three frames.

Brynne Dordel allowed just three hits and three walks while striking out 14 en route to her eighth win of the season as the Bulldogs claimed the 4-1 victory.

McDaniel took the loss for the Eagles, dropping to 5-8 on the season. McDaniel allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, walking one and striking out two. Breaux allowed a run on five hits and a walk in two innings of work, and Stephanie Sullivan (Venice, Fla.) pitched a perfect seventh inning.

O’Mara finished 2-for-3, while Tiffani Upchurch (Lake Wales, Fla.) picked up the only other hit for FGCU.

The Eagles will travel to Clearwater, Fla. tomorrow for this weekend’s USF The Game tournament. The Blue and Green will take on No. 21 Illinois at 4 p.m. and Maryland at 6 p.m.
