Softball Drops Two on Day Two of Home Tournament
Sunday, February 20, 2011

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team dropped a pair of games, 2-0, to Saint Louis and South Carolina, respectively, on the second day of the Homewood Suites/Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Tournament on Saturday.

The two losses drop the Eagles’ record to 3-6 on the young season, heading into their final game of the tournament against BIG EAST foe Villanova (1-3) at 11:15 a.m.

Saint Louis scored in the second inning off a solo home run from Kristain Burger. The Billikens held the one-run advantage until the fourth inning when it tacked on another.

FGCU got its best chance to score in the fifth inning when the Eagles loaded the bases with walks. SLU pitcher Hannah Huebbe struck out the leadoff batter of the inning before giving up back-to-back walks to freshman Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City) and senior Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast). Huebbe then buckled down and struck the next batter out before walking freshman Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) to load the bases. Huebbe once again struck out an Eagle batter to end the offensive threat.

The Blue and Green had three hits in the game and were dealt nine walks, but unfortunately left 12 runners stranded. Sophomore Stephanie Sullivan (Venice, Fla./Venice) picked up her first loss of the season (2-1), giving up five hits, two runs and four walks while striking out two.

In the second game, South Carolina and FGCU were deadlocked at 0-0 until the top of the sixth inning, when, once again, the opposition hit a solo-shot to take the lead. The Gamecocks struck again in the seventh after back-to-back singles put two runners on base. A fantastic double play by freshman Regan Knapik (Land O'Lakes, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch) notched two outs, but left a runner on second base. A South Carolina single to left field plated the runner and gave the Gamecocks the 2-0 lead.

The nightcap was similar to the opener, as the Eagles left seven runners on the bags on four walks and two hits. Redshirt senior pitcher Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla./Florida Tech) (1-3) picked up the loss, giving up two runs on seven hits, while fanning three in a complete game of work.
