FORT MYERS, Fla. – Strong performances from redshirt senior pitcher Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla./Florida Tech) and the Eagle defense led the FGCU softball team to a 5-0 victory against the BIG EAST’S St. John’s in the final game of the Stevens Industries FGCU Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

FGCU closes out the tournament on a three-game win streak to improve its record to 9-12 overall, while the Red Storm fall to 7-12. The victory also gave the Eagles the tournament championship with a 4-1 record over the weekend.

McDaniel (3-5) went the distance, allowing only two hits and one walk, while fanning four in her second shutout of the season. The defense did not allow a runner past first base and recorded three straight outs in four innings with no errors in its fourth shutout of the season.

Leading the offense was senior Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and freshman Emily Lanier’s (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony) two-RBI double. Classmate Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) also scored two runs on one hit and a walk.

In the first inning, Platt led off with a double to center field before advancing on an error and scoring on a wild pitch. Freshman Jessica Barnes (Winter Park, Fla./Haines City) singled to right field and Garabedian walked before advancing on Lanier’s sacrifice bunt. Another St. John’s wild pitch scored both the runners, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

Each team recorded just one hit over the next five innings until FGCU’s three-hit sixth. Platt singled to right field and advanced to third on Garabedian’s single. With runners on the corners, Lanier hit a double to right center to score both runners, giving FGCU a five-run advantage.

Linzee Sumrall (0-2) got the loss, giving up seven hits, four earned runs and five walks, while striking out three. Chrissy Montez and Jackie Reed had the Red Storm’s two hits.

FGCU now heads west to play No. 7 Arizona State on Wednesday at 9 p.m. in Tempe, Ariz. The Eagles then take part in the Diamond Devil Tournament hosted by Arizona State beginning on March 10.
