Eagles Travel to Mercer, Kennesaw State for A-Sun Series
FORT MYERS, Fla. – With non-conference games over, the FGCU softball team opens April with its full attention on Atlantic Sun play as it travels to Georgia to play doubleheaders against Mercer and Kennesaw State. The Eagles play Mercer on Saturday at 2 p.m. before traveling north to Kennesaw State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
With a pair of losses to in-state rival FIU on Wednesday, FGCU slipped to 19-19, but own a 2-0 record in conference play with its wins at Campbell on Saturday, March 26.
FGCU owns an all-time winning record against both teams, holding a 4-2 edge over Mercer (17-13, 1-5 A-Sun) while boasting a 6-game win streak against Kennesaw State (18-12, 2-2 A-Sun). Last season, the Eagles swept both series en route to finishing third in the conference. FGCU beat Kennesaw State, 4-3 (8) and 4-2 in March before closing out the season with two wins over Mercer.
Offensively, the Eagles have turned to veteran Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) at the plate. The senior continues to lead the team with her .385 average, 37 hits, including 11 doubles, while leading the A-Sun in walks (35) and on-base percentage (.565). Currently on a seven-game hitting streak, freshman Tori Williams (Dunnellon, Fla./Dunnellon) is batting .474 during that time.
Redshirt senior Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla./Florida Tech) owns a 1.74 ERA in 108.1 innings of work, fanning a team-best 68 batters to post an 8-9 record. Senior Kelci Breaux (Okeechobee, Fla./Brevard CC) (6-6) has won five out of her last seven games including two complete game shutouts. She has a 3.66 ERA in 67 innings of work, recording 59 strikeouts in 18 appearances.
Mercer boasts four batters with averages over .300, led by Sara Stukes’ .379 clip. She owns team-bests in doubles (8), slugging percentage (.667), RBI (30) and total bases (58). McKenzie Woody is batting .350 for the Bears, leading the team in runs scored (24) and hits (36). In the circle, the duo of Kari Chambers and Jenny Holtz are Mercer’s go-to pitchers. Holtz has a 2.91 ERA in 81.2 innings of work, striking out a team-leading 89 to post a 9-6 record. Chambers holds a team-best 2.22 ERA in 85 innings of work, tossing 87 strike outs and owns three shutouts in 19 appearances.
Sharon Swanson tops the Kennesaw State offense with a .400 average, while two other batters own averages above .300. Swanson leads the team with a .660 slugging percentage and 40 hits. She has seven home runs and five doubles, which both tie for first for the Owls. Jessica Cross owns a 2.52 ERA in 69.1 innings of work, striking out 55 to record Kennesaw State’s best record in the circle at 8-4. Abbey Meixel (4-2) leads the team with 59 strikeouts in 48 innings.
