Jacksonville Takes Two from FGCU on Monday
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Jacksonville’s Sarah Sigrest threw a one-hitter in game one as the FGCU softball team fell 8-0 in five innings before dropping game two, 5-2, in an Atlantic Sun doubleheader on Monday evening at the JU Softball Complex.
FGCU now falls to 28-24 overall record and an 11-5 mark in the A-Sun, while Jacksonville improves to 35-14 overall and 14-2 in conference action. The pair of losses puts the Eagles four games out of first-place with only four games remaining on its schedule.
Eight players in the Jacksonville lineup recorded a hit on the afternoon as the Dolphins’ tallied eight runs on 11 hits and five walks to win the game. Sigrest gave up her only hit to freshman Kirsten Bembnowski (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake) in the fifth inning, while fanning eight batters en route to her eighth shutout of the season.
The Dolphins tallied their first run on the only extra base hit of the game, Amanda Schmidt’s double to left field, plating Kayla Ouellett, who reached on a single. Jacksonville pushed its lead to 4-0 in the third on RBI-singles from Karson Tuck, Olivia Kline and Brittany Eppley.
Jacksonville added four runs in the fourth on five hits to make it a run-rule game. FGCU was not able to get Bembnowski past first base as she was thrown out attempting to stretch her hit to a double.
Redshirt senior starting pitcher Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla./Florida Tech) (14-10) got tagged with the loss, giving up all eight runs on nine hits and five walks, while striking out three in 3.2 innings. Sophomore Stephanie Sullivan (Venice, Fla./Venice) gave up two hits in 0.1 innings.
In game two, FGCU took a 1-0 lead when a two-out bases-loaded hit by pitch earned freshman Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony) an RBI. With the bases still loaded, starting pitcher Kline got the last batter swinging to end the threat.
FGCU would strand nine runners on base as its only other run would come on freshman Brittney Garabedian’s (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) solo shot to left field in the seventh inning.
The Dolphins fired three home runs off senior Kelci Breaux (Okeechobee, Fla./Brevard CC) en route to five runs in the second and third innings.
In the circle, Breaux (6-7) and redshirt junior Morgan Campen (Rougemont, N.C./Northern) went three innings each, with Breaux taking the loss. Breaux surrendered five runs (three earned) on four hits, while fanning three. Campen came in relief, giving up five hits and two walks.
Kline went 1.2 innings, giving up one run on a hit and three walks, while striking out two. Sigrest came in relief, earning the win in 5.1 innings of work, giving up four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
The Eagles stay in Jacksonville to play UNF on Tuesday at 3 p.m. UNF snapped a five-game losing streak with a win against the Camels on Friday.
