FGCU Hosts Stetson in Final Series of 2011
FORT MYERS, Fla. – After a 1-3 outing at Jacksonville and UNF, the FGCU Softball team returns to the friendly confines of the FGCU Softball Complex to host in-state rival Stetson in its final Atlantic Sun doubleheader on Friday at 5 p.m.
The Eagles are in third place with a 12-6 conference record and 29-25 overall, while Stetson is 19-25 overall with a 4-10 mark in the A-Sun.
Stetson holds a 6-2 advantage in the all-time series against FGCU. The Hatters swept the series in DeLand, 4-2 and 4-0 last season and ended the season in second ahead of the Eagles. The Blue and Green’s two wins in the series came at the FGCU Softball Complex in 2009 by scores of 6-1 and 7-3.
Senior Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) continues to lead the Eagles in hits (52) and RBI (30), while topping the A-Sun with a .388 average, 44 runs scored and 16 doubles and is third in the league with a .687 slugging percentage. Platt tops the country in walks (53) and is sixth in walks per game with 0.98.
Backing up Platt in conference play, freshman Tori Williams (Dunnellon, Fla./Dunnellon) has been a standout in conference action, posting a .382 average with 14 runs scored and has had a hit in nine out of the last 10 games including the only two in the 2-0 shutout at UNF. She was a perfect 6-for-6 against Belmont with one run scored and two stolen bases.
In the circle, redshirt senior Catherine McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla./Florida Tech) (15-10) owns a 1.65 ERA, while striking out 115 batters in 161.1 innings. She also ranks 10th in the country in walks allowed per seven innings at 1.00. Holding a 3-3 conference record, Stephanie Sullivan (Venice, Fla./Venice) tops the team with a 1.04 ERA in A-Sun games, while only giving up four earned runs and three walks. Sullivan has struck out 16 in 27 innings.
Stetson comes to Fort Myers after defeating Florida A&M, 3-1, on Wednesday as freshman pitcher Meredith Owen tossed a complete game two-hitter. Owen owns a 7-11 record with a 2.38 ERA with 115 77 strikeouts in 120.2 innings. The Hatters are led offensively by a quartet of above .300 hitters, with Chrissy Morello posting a team-best .338 average. Jill Semento backs her up with a .322 clip that includes a team-high seven home runs and 29 RBI.
Despite its finish in the conference, FGCU cannot compete in the conference postseason tournament due to the NCAA reclassifying period. The Eagles will be eligible for postseason play in 2012.
