FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team dropped a pair of contests against Delaware, 6-4, and ACC foe Boston College, 6-3, on the second day of the LaQuinta Inn & Suites FGCU Tournament on Saturday night.

The Eagles’ record falls to 3-6 on the young season, heading into Sunday’s match-up against Binghamton (2-2) at 1:30 at the FGCU Softball Complex.

In the opener, Delaware jumped out to a 6-1 lead by the end of the fourth after scoring two runs in the first, third and fourth inning. The Blue Hens’ six runs were credited to FGCU starter Morgan Campen (Rougemont, N.C./Northern HS), who allowed six runs on seven hits.

FGCU climbed right back into the game in the top of the fifth behind back-to-back solo home runs from sophomore Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City HS) and freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) that cut the deficit to 6-3. Barnes’ home run was the fourth of her career, while Carpenter made the trip around the bases for the second time in the first eight games of her collegiate career.

Sophomore Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) took over for Campen in the top of the fifth and faced the minimum in her first inning of work to keep momentum with the Eagles. That momentum turned into another solo home run – FGCU’s third of the game - in the top of the sixth, as sophomore Kirsten Bembnowski (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake) took a pitch over the right field wall to make it 6-4.

Bembnowski’s homer knocked Delaware starter Kathleen Conway from the game with one out in the fifth. The Blue Hens turned to Chenxi Jiao, who allowed just one base runner over the final 1.2 innings to put an end to the FGCU comeback attempt.

Barnes, Carpenter and sophomore Emily Lanier occupied the 1-3 spots in the Eagles’ lineup, going a combined 4-for-9 with three runs scored, two home runs and three RBI. Campen was dealt the loss, slipping to 1-1.

In the nightcap, FGCU took an early lead after back-to-back triples from sophomore Tori Williams (Dunnellon, Fla./Dunnellon HS) and Carpenter gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Boston College scored five runs on five hits, highlighted by a three-run homer from Brittany Wilkins. FGCU starter Britney Pugh (Pembroke Pines, Fla./St. Petersburg College) threw five innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs to take the loss.

The Eagles scored two in the bottom half of the fifth after an RBI triple from Carpenter, who later scored off a wild pitch.

Boston College added an insurance run in the top of the seventh off an unearned run. Nicole D’Argento came in relief to earn a save after starter Amanda Horowitz earned the win.
