Softball Hosts LaQuinta Inn & Suites FGCU Spring Break Tournament

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team remains home to host the LaQuinta Inn & Suites FGCU Spring Break Tournament, beginning on Friday at the FGCU Softball Complex. Colgate, Georgetown, Howard, St. Francis, Stony Brook and Utah travel to Fort Myers to face the Eagles.
FGCU (9-13) opens the tournament against BIG EAST foe Georgetown at 6 p.m. and follows with an 8:15 p.m. contest against Utah on Friday. The Eagles face Colgate (1:30 p.m.) and Stony Brook (8:15 p.m.) to finish the tournament on Sunday. The Green and Blue split a doubleheader against Kennesaw State to open Atlantic Sun play on Wednesday, March 8. The Eagles won the first game 2-0, before dropping the second game 3-1.
Freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) leads the offensive attack for FGCU with a .317 average, 20 hits, five triples, 14 runs, two home runs and 13 RBI. Carpenter also leads the team with a .587 slugging percentage and has had six multi-hit games already this season. Sophomore Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City) has a team-leading 15 runs scored and two home runs, second with six stolen bases and second with a .305 batting average. Sophomore Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony HS) is third on the team with a .304 average, seven doubles, one home run and 10 RBI.
In the circle, freshman Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) has a 6-2 record with six complete games and three shutouts. Morgan’s team-leading 2.10 ERA includes 47 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .197. Sophomore Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) is 1-2 with a 2.12 ERA, 18 strikeouts and one save in 36.1 innings.
Stony Brook (5-3) posted a 3-1 record at the GW Colonial Classic on March 2-4, defeating Siena, Robert Morris and Army, while falling to Buffalo. The Seawolves outscored their opposition by a 20-5 margin and have not allowed a run in 12 consecutive innings heading into this weekend.
Howard has had a tough start to their 2012 campaign, dropping 11 of 12 games. Howard's lone win came against George Mason on Feb. 17, but since then, the team has gone 0-8 and has been outscored 101-26 over that stretch. Lorae Robinson leads the Lady Bison with five RBI, 12 hits, three stolen bases and eight runs scored.
St. Francis (4-5) will be playing their third consecutive tournament in Florida this weekend after posting a 2-3 record at the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. on March 2-4 and a 2-2 record at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla. Through eight games, Kaitlin Andler was hitting .591 (13-for-22) with five RBI. In the circle, pitchers Megan Layne (1.47 ERA) and Chelsea Rex (1.56) have each earned two wins.
Colgate will be looking for their first win this weekend after a 0-4 weekend at the University of Virginia Invitational on Feb. 25-26. Colgate was outscored 33-9 in four games in Charlottesville, including a 13-2 defeat to the host Cavaliers. Tera Vaughn leads the team with a .286 average and two RBI. Courtney O'Connell has thrown a team-high 12 innings and owns a 3.00 ERA.
Utah (15-3) enters the weekend on an 11-game winning streak and is receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls. Third baseman Whitney Holm is off to a stellar start with a .519 average, eight home runs and 26 RBI in 18 games. Generra Nielson has earned ten wins (10-2) in the circle and owns 122 strikeouts in 80 innings pitched.
Georgetown (8-11) will be looking to snap a five-game slide entering the weekend. Georgetown is led offensively by Shikara Lowe, who sports a .417 average, three home runs and 14 RBI. In the circle, Lauren O'Leary has a team-best 3.23 ERA and four wins, while striking out 45 batters in 47.1 innings pitched.
There are still plenty of special ticket offers and promotions for FGCU fans and students. Little leaguers who wear their jersey get into all games for free the entire weekend for both baseball and softball with the purchase of an adult ticket. FGCU faculty, staff and students all get in free throughout the season with their Eagle ID.
Tickets for the LaQuinta Inn & Suites FGCU Spring Break Tournament can be purchased through the FGCU Ticket Office in Alico Arena either in person or by phone at (239) 590-7145. Tickets are also available at www.FGCUathletics.com/tickets. All Tournament passes, valid for all games during the tournament, will be $15 and single game tickets will be $6 for adults and $3 for youth (ages 3-18).
FGCU will be running the “Diamond Dollars” promotion throughout the entire season, which current students are eligible for. Students attending the game will be entered to win $100 if an FGCU player hits the SIP sign on the outfield wall in the air or hits a homerun over the sign. If the game finishes without a winner, the money rolls over to the next game continuing to increase the pot. Winners must have a valid FGCU student ID and be present to win.
