FORT MYERS, Fla. – Coming off a mid-week split against Canisius and Northern Illinois, the FGCU softball team travels to Clearwater, Fla. for the USF The Game Tournament on Mar. 16-18 at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.

The Eagles (14-14) begin the USF Tournament with a pair of games against Rutgers and Northern Colorado at 4:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m., respectively, on Friday. The Green and Blue follow with contests against UNC-Wilmington (1:45 p.m.) and Fairfield (6:15 p.m.) on Saturday. FGCU closes the five-game tournament with a contest against Atlantic 10 member UMass at 1:30 p.m.

In their last outing, the Green and Blue earned a convincing 9-0 win against Canisius in five innings on Tuesday but dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Northern Illinois in the night cap.

Sophomore Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City) leads the team with a .343 average with three doubles, four home runs and 11 stolen bases, while freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./ Hagerty HS) sits second at .313 with five triples, two home runs and 13 RBI. Sophomore Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) leads the team with 18 runs batted in.

In the circle, freshman Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) has an 9-2 record with eight complete games and five shutouts. Morgan’s 1.58 ERA is second on the team, while adding 64 strikeouts in 71 innings of work. Sophomore Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) is 3-2 with a team-best 1.54 ERA, recording 24 strikeouts and one save in 54.2 innings.

Rutgers (7-11) recently went 3-3 in Clearwater, Fla. this past week with wins over Penn State (W, 9-0), LIU (W, 1-0) and Wisconsin-Green Bay (W, 4-3). The Scarlett Knights are led by Brittney Lindley who has a .395 average with three home runs and 12 RBI. Rutgers is led in the circle by Alyssa Landrith who has a 4-3 record.

Northern Colorado is 9-11 after dropping five-straight games in the state of Florida against Ball State twice (L, 9-1, L, 9-5), Stetson (L, 6-0), Youngstown State (L, 3-2) and UCF (L, 5-4). The Bears are led by Lindsey Smith who has three home runs and 21 RBI on the season. In the circle, Northern Colorado is led by Megan Wilkinson who has a 6-3 record with one save.

UNC-Wilmington enters the USF tournament with a 4-18 record after dropping seven-straight games. The Seahawks have two hitters batting over .300 in Lauryn Buckworth and Laura Sykes. Amanda Davenport leads UNCW with a 2.49 ERA in the circle.

Fairfield is 9-5 after winning five-straight games in the Rebel Games tournament in Orlando, Fla. The Stags are led by Rae Ball who is hitting .387 with three home runs and six RBI. In the circle, Ball is 3-2 with a 3.53 ERA.

UMass (7-7) is coming off a victory against Maryland, 4-1, on Mar. 4 after participating in the Easton Alabama Invite. The Minutemen are led by Cyndil Matthew who is hitting .415 with seven stolen bases. Sara Plourde leads UMass in the circle with a 6-5 record and a 2.97 ERA.
