FORT MYERS, Fla. – Going 4-3 last week, the FGCU softball team returns to the field with a doubleheader against Maryland and a single game against Dartmouth this week. The twin bill against the Terrapins starts on Wednesday, Mar. 21 at 5 p.m., followed by the Thursday game against Dartmouth at 5:30, both held at the FGCU Softball Complex.
The game against Dartmouth on Thursday will be the annual PINK game at 5:30pm. Pink t-shirts will be on sale for $10 with all proceeds going to breast cancer awareness.
The Eagles are 17-16 (1-1 A-Sun) on the season after earning recent victories against Canisius (W, 9-0), BIG EAST foe Rutgers (W, 5-2), UNC-Wilmington (W, 8-1) and Fairfield (W, 6-4).
The Green and Blue picked up its third Atlantic Sun Player of the Week award, as sophomore Kirsten Bembnowski (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake HS) was honored by the league office on Monday. With three multi-hit performances against Rutgers, UNC-Wilmington and Fairfield, the Palm Harbor, Fla., product also led the team with a .600 batting average, two doubles, a triple and five RBI. Bembnowski was 2-for-3 with two RBI in a 5-2 win over Rutgers. Bembnowski led the team in total bases (13), slugging percentage (.867) and on-base percentage (.684) and was stellar in the field, making 12 infield assists.
Bembnowski is tied for the team lead with a .329 batting average with classmate Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City). Barnes leads the team with four home runs and 13 stolen bases, while freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) is third with a .304 average on 28 hits, 21 runs and tied for fourth in the nation with five triples.
In the circle, freshman Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) has an 11-3 record with 10 complete games and five shutouts. Morgan’s 1.56 ERA is second on the team, while adding 79 strikeouts in 89.2 innings of work. Sophomore Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) is 4-3 with a team-best 1.40 ERA, recording 29 strikeouts and one save in 65 innings.
Maryland (18-9) is coming off a 2-3 record in the USF The Game tournament, with victories over Canisius (8-0) and Illinois (5-0) in addition to losses to Bryant (6-4), Boston University (1-0) and Florida A&M (9-0). Maryland is led by Bree Hanafin, who holds a .338 batting average on 24 hits, four doubles, one triple, one home run and 18 RBI. Leading the Terrapins in the circle is Kendra Knight with a 12-4 record, including 11 complete games, with 131 strikeouts in 105.2 innings.
Dartmouth enters the contest with a 4-5 record after going 3-3 record at the USF The Game tournament, earning wins against Kent State (5-0), Hartford (11-7), Iona College (2-1). The Big Green are led by Kara Curosh, who sports a .464 batting average on 13 hits, one double and three RBI. In the circle, Evan Gray has a 1-1 record with a 1.85 ERA in 11.1 innings.
