Softball Heads to Music City to Take On Lipscomb and Belmont

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After picking up a pair of wins last week, the FGCU softball team travels to Nashville, Tenn for two doubleheaders against Atlantic Sun foes Lipscomb and Belmont this weekend. The twin bill against the Bison starts on Friday, April 6 at 5 p.m., followed by a Saturday doubleheader against the Bruins at 5 p.m.

The Eagles are 22-20 (2-2 A-Sun) on the season after earning splits against Florida A&M (L, 5-3, W, 4-1) and Stetson (L, 3-2, W, 7-0). FGCU also lost a doubleheader against then-No. 22 Florida State (5-0, 7-1) in Tallahassee. The Green and Blue are currently tied for fourth in the A-Sun with Jacksonville, Stetson, Lipscomb and USC Upstate.

FGCU is led offensively by sophomore Jessica Barnes’ (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City) .302 average, four home runs, 30 runs, 21 stolen bases and 32 hits. Sophomore Kirsten Bembnowski (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake HS) is second on the team with a .295 average on 31 hits, two home runs and 18 RBI, while freshman Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) is fifth in the nation with six triples holding a .291 average on 34 hits and 24 runs. Sophomore Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) had two home runs last week, including a grand slam against Stetson to add to her team-leading five home runs and 28 RBI.

In the circle, freshman Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) owns a 13-5 record with 12 complete games and five shutouts. Morgan’s 1.70 ERA is second on the team, while adding 101 strikeouts in 119.1 innings of work. Sophomore Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) is 7-5 with a team-best 1.31 ERA, recording 37 strikeouts and one save in 90.2 innings. Redshirt senior Morgan Campen (Rougemont, N.C./Northern HS) leads the team with three saves, which is eighth in the nation. Overall the Eagles’ pitching staff is ranked 29th in the country with a 1.98 ERA.

Lipscomb (22-10, 2-2 A-Sun) is coming off a pair of splits in the River City against UNF (L, 1-0, W, 5-4) and Jacksonville (L, 1-0, W, 9-3). The Bison are led by Kelsey Cartwright, who holds a .386 batting average on 39 hits, 11 home runs, five doubles and 28 RBI. Lipscomb is led in the circle by A-Sun Preseason All-Conference member Whitney Kiihnl, who has a 17-6 record with a 1.52 ERA and 147 strikeouts in 147 innings. Kiihnl’s 17 wins is seventh in the nation and her six shutouts also ranks 19th in the country.

Belmont (6-24, 1-3 A-Sun) enters the contest on a three-game losing streak after going 1-3 last weekend against Jacksonville (W, 4-3, L, 4-2) and UNF (L, 5-4, L, 8-0). The Bruins are led by Ashley Byers, who sports a .338 batting average on 24 hits, four home runs and 15 RBI. In the circle, Mia Vierra holds a 3-10 record, including six complete games with a 6.53 ERA in 79.1 innings.
