FORT MYERS, Fla. – Leading the team to their first-ever Atlantic Sun Tournament berth and a 5-1 week, FGCU softball freshman pitcher Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe HS) and sophomore catcher Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) were named the Atlantic Sun Pitcher and Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday for the week of April 17-22.

Morgan and Zgrabik paced the Eagles to a 5-1 conference record on the week with two sweeps against Jacksonville (3-2, 3-2) and ETSU (10-0, 8-2) as well as a split against USC Upstate (L 2-1, W 8-6). The Green and Blue also clinched their first-ever A-Sun Tournament berth after sweeping ETSU last Friday.

Morgan earned her second A-Sun Pitcher of the Week award after going 2-1 with a 0.59 ERA on two earned runs in 23.2 innings of work. Morgan had three complete games, including a three-hit shutout in game one against ETSU. The first-year pitcher also threw a complete game against Jacksonville, throwing 11 innings in a 3-2 comeback victory.

The High Springs, Fla. product improved to 18-6 to lead the team and picked up her first save in game two against USC Upstate, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings.

Zgrabik finished last week hitting .476 on 10 hits with two doubles, three home runs, nine RBI and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Hitting safely in all six games, Zgrabik connected for a pair of home runs in game one against ETSU, including a grand slam which put the game out of reach.

The Venice, Fla. product went 3-for-4 in game two against USC Upstate to help the Eagles’ earn a split, providing a key go-ahead two-run home run off Hannah Alexander, who was third in the nation in wins. In conference play, Zgrabik leads the A-Sun in multiple categories, including hits (23), RBI (23), home runs (7), doubles (6), total bases (50) and average (.451).

FGCU returns to the field on Thursday, May 3 for a doubleheader against A-Sun rival North Florida at 5 p.m. at the FGCU Softball Complex.
