SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The FGCU softball team is one win away from heading to an NCAA Regional and the Eagles will face second-seeded Kennesaw State on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in the title game of the 2012 A-Sun conference softball championship at Cyrill stadium, televised live on ESPN3.com.

The No. 1 seeded Eagles are 36-22 on the season after taking down fifth-seeded Jacksonville (8-4) and sixth-seeded Stetson (3-0) to reach their first-ever A-Sun softball championship game in their first attempt. If FGCU were to lose against Kennesaw State it would set up a winner-take-all second game at 2:30 at Cyrill stadium.

Sophomore Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) provided the big blow against Jacksonville with a walk off grand slam to complete a comeback victory for the Eagles in the first game of the tournament. Against the Hatters earlier today, freshman pitcher Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) threw a four-hit shutout and junior Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers HS) had a three-run double to help FGCU defeat Stetson, 3-0, to clinch a berth into the title contest. Sophomore Regan Knapik (Land O’Lakes, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) is entering the championship with 138 assists, which has tied an FGCU season record with Christine Becks’ mark set back in 2003.

The Owls have been in elimination mode since day one after falling to Stetson, 7-2, on Thursday. Kennesaw State bounced back to defeat fifth-seeded Jacksonville on a walk off single in the ninth inning to stay alive in the tournament Thursday night. Earlier today, the Owls took down fourth-seeded Lipscomb, 9-2 and followed that win by knocking out sixth-seeded Stetson, 2-0.

The Green and Blue split their season series with Kennesaw State after winning game one 2-0 before falling 3-1 in the second game at the FGCU Softball Complex back on March 7.

The game will be televised live on ESPN3.com as Paul Crane will handle the play-by-play and Francesca Enea, a former softball player at the University of Florida, will be the color analyst.
