FORT MYERS, Fla. – In the third and final day of the LaQuinta Inn at the Airport Tournament, host FGCU fell to Georgia Southern 4-2 at the FGCU Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon, to finish the weekend off with a 3-2 record.

“It is a really disappointing loss because it seemed like we were in control for a majority of the game and it went south for us pretty quickly, but we just have to do a better job all the way around,” said head coach David Deiros. “We didn’t come up big in the last inning when we needed to so we need to go back to the drawing board and make sure we do a better job.”

FGCU (4-3) jumped out early courtesy of an infield RBI single from Kirsten Bembnowski (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake HS) with the bases loaded to give the host Eagles a 1-0 advance in the bottom of the first inning.

After a three strong, shutout innings from Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS), Jackie Owen (Cape Coral, Fla./Daytona State College) entered in the top of the fourth to keep the Georgia Southern bats silent which she did by retiring all six batters she faced in her two innings of work.

Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) kept her hot bat swinging as she led off in the home half of the fifth when she drove a ball down the left field line and over the wall to give FGCU a 2-0 lead through five innings.

Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) entered in the sixth for the Green and Blue as the third pitcher of the game for FGCU. Georgia Southern (6-3), a team that reached the 2012 NCAA Tournament after winning the Southern Conference, were not going to go away easily as they began to make a push. The visitors started to make contact in the sixth as they recorded two runs on four hits to pull even with FGCU at two runs apiece.

FGCU kept battling to regain the lead as they put runners on base in the bottom of the sixth, but failed to drive in a runner in scoring position with Georgia Southern’s Sarah Purvis, who pitched a perfect game on Friday afternoon versus Southern Illinois.

With two away in the top of the seventh, Georgia Southern delivered to bring in two runs and take a 4-2 lead over FGCU. The host Eagles made an effort in their half of the seventh, but Purvis shut the door and secured the victory for the visitors.

FGCU returns to action at the FGCU Softball Complex to host the LaQuinta Inn at the Airport Spring Break Invitational beginning on Friday, Feb. 22 and ending on Sunday, Feb. 24 for a total of fifteen games over the three day invitational. The Eagles will take on Minnesota on Friday, Feb. 22 at 5:30 p.m. for their first game of the event.
