FORT MYERS, Fla. – Set to begin its Atlantic Sun regular season and tournament championship defense, the FGCU softball team (17-9) will open its 2013 A-Sun schedule with a three-game set against in-state rival Stetson on Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17 at the FGCU Softball Complex.

Just days after completing two comebacks to defeat Maine and Valparaiso on Wednesday, March 13 at the FGCU Softball Complex, the Green and Blue will retake the field against Stetson in a doubleheader matchup on Saturday, March 16 with game times set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The three-game series between the two teams will conclude on Sunday, March 17 at 2 p.m.

With eight of the ten A-Sun member teams already having begun conference play, FGCU and Stetson are the only two that have yet to play a league game in the 2013 season.

FGCU looks to continue its offensive firepower behind the bat of 2013 A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) who has 38 RBI in the Eagles 26 games this season, which ranks seventh in the nation. Zgrabik currently leads the A-Sun in RBI, slugging percentage (.835), home runs (9) and total bases (66). When scoring three or more runs in contests this season, the Green and Blue have a 17-1 mark.

The Hatters (15-6) come to southwest Florida with a 16-member squad including a pitching staff that is four deep and a defense that includes several players that can field multiple positions. Since finishing 26-22 (9-9 A-Sun) last season, Stetson added six freshmen and a junior college transfer to bolster its lineup.

The Hatters were selected to finish sixth in the 2013 A-Sun Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the very same poll in which the Eagles were unanimously selected to finish first in with FGCU having received all 10 first place votes.

The 2012 FGCU squad went 38-24 (14-4 A-Sun) on its way to a share of the regular season conference crown before sweeping through the conference tournament by outscoring opponents 19-4 in three games as the Eagles captured the A-Sun Tournament title to secure a spot in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

The last time the Green and Blue took on Stetson was on May 11, 2012 at the A-Sun Tournament in Spartanburg, S.C. with FGCU taking the contest 3-0 to advance to the championship game. Then, freshman Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Santa Fe HS) threw a four-hit shutout and then, junior Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers HS) hit a three-run double to account for the FGCU offense.
