FORT MYERS, Fla. – In another successful come from behind effort, the FGCU softball team (20-9, 3-0 A-Sun) beat Stetson 10-4 in the final game of a three-game set to complete an Eagle sweep on Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Softball Complex.
“It is really great to start our conference season going 3-0 and I am really proud of the way our kids battled adversity,” said head coach David Deiros. “They did a great job of coming back and more than anything else they did what they needed to do and stayed with the plan.”
The three-game series between FGCU and Stetson was one of streaks and trends with FGCU now leading the all-time series 9-7 against the Hatters after the three-game sweep over the weekend. The Green and Blue have now won five games in a row and Stetson is now 0-7 all-time in games played at the FGCU Softball Complex.
Stetson’s offense went to work right from the start of the game as the Hatters loaded the bases and capitalized to bring across two runs in the top of the first, but Regan Knapik (Land O’Lakes, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) was once again solid at shortstop for FGCU as she turned a double play to end the inning.
In the top of the fourth, Stetson used a one-run long ball from designated player Meredith Owen to make it 3-0 and stretch their lead over the Eagles on the road.
With a runner on first and no outs in the home half of the fourth inning, Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City HS) roped a ball that rolled all the way to the fence in right center for an RBI triple that made it 3-1 and awoke the bats of the Green and Blue. After loading the bases later in the inning, Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) skied a ball to the first baseman with two outs, but a fielding error kept the inning alive and contributed to a five-run inning for FGCU that put them up 5-3.
After a solo home run, Stetson pulled within one run in the visitor’s frame of the fifth. FGCU would answer with another five-run inning, this time in the bottom of the fifth. A pinch hit double from Hannah Horwath (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary HS) ensured it would not remain a one-run game for long as she brought across an insurance run to give the Eagles a 6-4 advantage.
The fifth inning scoring barrage was powered by freshman Jessica Butler (Plant City, Fla./Plant City HS) who recorded her first career hit in style with a standup double that cleared the loaded bases to add more insurance runs and make it 10-4 in favor of the Green and Blue over the Hats.
FGCU will step out of league play twice this week to face Iowa State on Tuesday, March 19 at 6 p.m. and will play a doubleheader against Dartmouth on Thursday, March 21 at 4 p.m. All three contests will be played at the FGCU Softball Complex
