FORT MYERS, Fla. – With its season now having concluded, the FGCU softball team (36-18, 16-7 Atlantic Sun) is beginning to collect postseason accolades and recognition for its accomplishments during the 2013 spring semester.  Following suit with the rest of FGCU athletics, the softball squad of 20 Eagles were able to set high standards in the classroom while simultaneously finding success on the field.

“Our players truly exemplify the meaning of the term Student-Athlete and we couldn’t be more proud of their efforts and accomplishments,” said head coach David Deiros. “Our last three years in the classroom have been the best of our 11 year tenure but, our players truly outdid themselves this past semester.  Even in the face of significant time constraints with travel and games, they were able to post a 3.49 GPA which is the highest team GPA in softball history.”

There was no drop-off in the team’s performance on the field as they posted their highest RPI ranking (56th) since 2009, when the program was No. 26 in the RPI.

18 of 20 student-athletes on the softball roster (90%) earned a spot on both the Atlantic Sun Conference Honor Roll as well as the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll by earning a 3.0 GPA or better this semester.  In addition, 12 of the 20 Eagles (60%) earned a spot on FGCU’s honor roll with nine making Dean’s List (3.5 GPA or higher) and three making the President’s List (perfect 4.0).

FGCU placed two Eagles, senior Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers HS) and sophomore Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS), on the A-Sun Academic All-Conference team for success in the classroom and on the playing field. Carpenter posted a 3.90 GPA while majoring in physical therapy and Fernandez compiled a 3.86 GPA as an Elementary Education major. Both Eagles starred on the field this season as Carpenter was named to the A-Sun All-Conference second team and the outfield, while Fernandez was named to the A-Sun All –Tournament team after her strong performance during the 2013 A-Sun Championship.
