MIAMI, Fla. – The FGCU softball team concluded the FIU Classic with a 9-1 loss to Wisconsin Sunday morning in Miami. With the loss, the Eagles fall to 6-4-1 on the season and finish the FIU Classic with a record of 1-4.
“We fell behind early again like we did against Georgia Southern,” said head coach David Deiros. “Most of it was because of what Wisconsin was able to accomplish with their game plan and part of it was because we were unable to respond very well in any of our facets – from coaching to hitting and fielding and pitching. We’ve got some time to get together before we play again. We are really looking forward to the opportunity to show that these last three games were an anomaly and not the way we are going to play the game.”
For the third day of the tournament, junior Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) led the Eagles with two hits. Louie Ross (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker High School) produced the Green and Blue’s only run batted in on the day with a single that scored Carpenter from third base.
Wisconsin struck early with two runs in the top of the first. The Badgers used two singles and an FGCU infield error to take a 2-0 lead.
The Badgers added two more runs in the top of the second after a string of two-out singles. Wisconsin extended its lead to 7-0 in the top of the third with three runs on three hits, a walk and a stolen base.
The Eagles responded in the bottom of the third. Carpenter successfully reached base with a lead-off bunt and moved to second on a groundout. A second groundout moved Carpenter to third base with two outs. A two-out single from Ross drove Carpenter home to put the Green and Blue on the scoreboard.
After two scoreless innings, the Badgers added two runs in the sixth inning to end the game with a 9-1 lead.
Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe High School) was charged with the loss to move to 1-2 on the season. Morgan allowed five earned runs on seven hits. She walked three batters and struck out three. Jackie Owen (Cape Coral, Fla. /North Fort Myers High School) pitched three innings of relief work and allowed two earned runs on seven hits. Owen struck out four of the 16 batters she faced and walked just one.
The Eagles will return home to host the FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Round Robin next weekend. The tournament will feature North Dakota, Villanova, Arkansas, Harvard and Eastern Michigan.
