@FGCU_Softball Hosts Midweek Double Header with Oakland and Eastern Michigan

FORT MYERS, Fla. – In a break from the tournament schedule, the FGCU Softball team will host a double header Wednesday, Feb. 26 with Oakland University and Eastern Michigan at the FGCU Softball Complex.  The Eagles will take on Oakland at 4:45 p.m. before facing Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m.  The two teams will begin the day with a 2 p.m. battle of neutral teams.

Game One

The Eagles will begin the double header against Oakland University.  The 2-7 Golden Grizzles are led by sluggers Erika Polidori and Morgan Muron.  Polidori leads the team with two homeruns and nine RBI and a .414 batting average while Muron is batting .357 through nine games with four RBI and one homer.   The team defeated Northern Colorado and Siena earlier this season but has fallen to Georgia Southern, Tennessee and ETSU.  Wednesday will mark the Eagles’ first meeting with the Golden Grizzlies.

Oakland’s young pitching staff is led by Kaley Waalkes, who holds a 3.15 ERA with six strike outs.  Erin Kowhacki maintains an ERA of 4.94 and has struck out 19 batters in 28 innings.  The Golden Grizzlies are led by first year coach Connie Miller and will travel to the Sunshine State for a double header with Ave Maria on Tuesday, Feb. 25 before making their way to Fort Myers.

Game Two

Following the Oakland matchup, FGCU will face Eastern Michigan in a rematch of Sunday afternoon’s 12-0 win.  With help from Chelsea Zgrabik’s (Venice, Fla./Venice High School) home run and four RBI, the Eagles defeated EMU in five innings.  Junior Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) added with two hits and two RBI, while  Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero High School) threw five complete innings and struck out four for the win.  Eastern Michigan put up five hits but was unable to put any runs on the board. 

After going 2-3 at the FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Round Robin, the EMU Eagles are now 4-5 on the season.  The team defeated Virginia to open the year and picked up wins over North Carolina Central, Villanova and North Dakota.

Individually, Eastern Michigan is led at the plate by Aoife Duffy, who holds a batting average of .364 with four hits in four games.  Lindsay Smith adds an average of .286 with three RBI and one homerun.  The pitching staff is led by Abbie Minsker’s ERA of 2.33.  Lindsay Rich contributes offensively and in the circle with a batting average of .286, an ERA of 4.42 and a record of 2-1. Eastern Michigan is led by head coach Melissa Gentile.

The Green and Blue

After hosting the FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Round Robin Tournament this past weekend, the Eagles hold a record of 9-6-1.  The team outscored its opponents 15-1 in its last two games.  FGCU maintains a team batting average of .290 with 80 runs scored in 16 games.  The Eagles have held opponents to a mark of .282 with 63 runs on 117 hits. 

Last weekend the Green and Blue were led by Louie Ross (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker High School) who played in three games and went 6-for-11 from the plate for a .545 average.  Ross recorded two runs and six hits with a double, triple and homerun and 12 total bases and a slugging percentage of 1.091.

Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe High School)  led the Eagles from the circle with one just one earned run allowed on eight hits.  Morgan struck out five and held an ERA of 0.58 on the weekend. 

Overall on the season Carpenter leads the team with 24 hits in 45 at bats.  She has recorded six doubles, three homeruns and 16 RBI for a .867 slugging percentage and a batting average of .533.  Ross, Mackenzie McAvoy (Plant City, Fla./Plant City High School) and Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City High School) all maintain an average of over .300 for the Eagles.

From the circle, Owen leads the team with 22 innings pitched in six appearances.  The senior has struck out 11 batters and holds an ERA of 2.86 and a record of 1-0.
