FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Softball team hosted Atlantic Sun Conference opponent ETSU in a double header Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Softball Complex. The Eagles swept the Bucs to move to 16-11-1 on the year improve to over .500 at 3-2 in conference as ETSU’s record fell to 10-10 and 1-4 in league action.
“These were really efficient victories for us today and it’s a nice win of the series regardless of the result tomorrow” said head coach David Deiros. “I’m really proud of the way our kids played today. I thought Shelby and Amanda pitched extremely well and I thought our defense made some really remarkable plays behind them. We had an almost clean slate in both games and that’s a really nice way to play defense. We’ll go for the series sweep tomorrow and see what happens.”
FGCU was led by junior Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) who had four RBI and one home run on the day. The Eagles produced three home runs and 15 total hits through two games to score 10 runs.
Both Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe High School) and Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero High School) led the team from the circle, each adding a win to their record. Morgan threw seven innings and struck out one batter to improve her record to 7-2, while Josie also threw seven innings and struck out one batter to move to 4-4.
The Eagles got started early in the bottom of the first inning with leadoff batter Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City High School) drawing a walk. To follow the walk, Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice High School) hit a bomb over the left field fence to give the Eagles an early 2-0 lead.
Both teams were held scoreless through the second inning before ETSU responded in the top of the third with a single up the middle and a fielder’s choice. With runners on first and second, ETSU grounded out to the pitcher but advanced the runners to put the Buccaneers in scoring position. With two outs, ETSU hit a single through the left side to score one run. At the end of three innings, FGCU led ETSU 2-1.
In the bottom of the fifth inning FGCU was determined to match ETSU with a run. Tori Van Camp (Zellwood, Fla./Apopka High School) entered the game as a pinch hitter and did her job as she hit a single to center field. Barnes reached on a fielder’s choice and Mackenzie McAvoy (Plant City, Fla./Plant City High School) singled through the left side to advance Barnes. With runners on first and second, Carpenter singled through the right side to score Barnes. After five innings the Eagles led 3-1.
The Eagle bats did not stop as they continued to score in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kirsten Bembnowski (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor) led FGCU off with a single though the left side. Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep High School) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner before Regan Knapik (Land O’ Lakes, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch High School) also singled through the left side to score Bembnowski. With two outs, Barnes hit a shot over the left center fence to tack on two more runs. FGCU continued to lead ETSU 6-1 at the end of the inning.
ETSU recorded one more run but were unable to match the score and ultimately earned a 6-2 victory.
The second game was defensive battle through four innings with neither team scoring a run. ETSU was the first to get the bats started with a single through the left side. The runner stole second and advanced to third on a ground out to the second baseman. One run crossed the plate as a wild pitch got passed the catcher. ETSU lead FGCU 1-0 after five innings
