FORT MYERS, FLA. – The FGCU softball team will continue Atlantic Sun action with the Owls of Kennesaw State in a three-game series this weekend.  The matchup will begin with a double header Saturday, April 5 at 2 p.m. and will conclude with a single contest at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The Eagles are 20-18-1 on the season after splitting a double header with FIU on Wednesday evening but are currently riding a six-game losing streak in conference play.

The Green and Blue

Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) has led the Eagles this season at the plate and currently leads the team with a batting average of .455 to rank 13th in the nation and first in the conference. Carpenter holds a .964 fielding percentage in the outfield and paces the team with seven home runs and 35 RBI through 39 games. Carpenter has also added nine doubles and crossed the plate 30 times to rank among the top 30 in the nation in on base percentage.  Carpenter is also ranked third in the nation in slugging percentage with a .723.

Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla/Venice High School) adds an average of .354 for FGCU with 35 hits in 99 at bats. Zgrabik has hit nine hits over the fence and has knocked in 31 runs. Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City High School) holds a batting average of .300 or higher with a mark of .323.  Barnes also ranks among the top 30 in the nation for runs per game and ranks fourth in the nation for triples with five.

Offensively, FGCU has a combined average of .268 and has outscored its opponents, 156-143.

The FGCU pitching staff is led by Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe High School) as she maintains an ERA of 3.00 and holds a record of 7-5 in the circle. Morgan has allowed just 31 earned runs through 72.1 innings of work. Jackie Owen (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers High School) has an ERA of 3.36 in 15 appearances. She has started 10 games for the Eagles and has allowed 27 earned runs in 56.1 innings.

The pitching staff holds a collective ERA of 3.30 and has struck out 104 batters and held opponents to a batting average of just .281.

Kennesaw State

The Owls with a record of 18-19 on the season and 7-7 in the A-Sun. Kennesaw State is recently ranked fifth in the conference behind USC Upstate, Mercer, Stetson and Lipscomb. 

Kennesaw State is led by sophomore Angie Dascoli and freshman Taylor Denton.  Dascoli has a .368 batting average and has 39 hits and two homeruns for 20 RBI.  Denton maintains a .354 batting average with 40 hits for eight RBI.

From the circle the Owls are led by senior Amanda Henderson and junior Paige Mathews. Henderson has a record of 14-7 with 140 strike outs and an ERA of 2.61.  Mathews holds a record of 3-9 with 78 strike outs and a 3.56 ERA.

Head coach Wes Holly Jr. is in his seventh season with Kennesaw State.

All-Time Meetings

The Eagles hold a 9-4 record in all-time meetings with the Owls.  The team went 2-2 last year including a win in the Atlantic Sun Championship tournament.  The previous season, FGCU and KSU split before the Eagles defeated Kennesaw State 8-0 in the Atlantic Sun Championship game.

In last year’s first meeting, the Eagles took an 11-3 win before falling 4-1 and 3-2 in the next two regular season meetings.  In the Atlantic Sun tournament, the Eagles used a seventh-inning homerun from Carpenter two take a 6-4 walkoff win.  Barnes and Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) also added homeruns for FGCU.

Next Up

FGCU will return to the FGCU Softball Complex to take on FAU (23-17; 6-6 Conference USA) in a mid-week double header.  The Eagles and Owls begin battle on Wednesday, April 9, with first pitch of the double header scheduled for 5 p.m.
