With its season now having concluded, the FGCU softball team (36-18, 16-7 Atlantic Sun) is beginning to collect postseason accolades and recognition for its accomplishments during the 2013 spring semester. Following suit with the rest of FGCU athletics, the softball squad of 20 Eagles were able to set high standards in the classroom while simultaneously finding success on the field.

With the 2013 regular season having ended, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced its 2013 DI All-Region Teams on Thursday afternoon. Two members of the FGCU softball team (36-18, 16-7 Atlantic Sun) were named to South Region teams, junior Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) was named to the first team and sophomore Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) was named to the region’s second team.

After having its 2013 season come to a close, head coach David Deiros announced four team awards after a year in which the FGCU softball team went 36-18 overall, with a 16-7 mark in Atlantic Sun Conference play. The four awards include Most Valuable Player, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and the Eagle Pride award.

With the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship having concluded with No. 2 USC Upstate taking the crown to clinch an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, the conference announced its All-Tournament team. Senior Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla/North Fort Myers HS) of the FGCU softball team (36-18, 16-7 A-Sun) was the lone Eagle to be named to the team, the A-Sun announced Saturday evening from Draper Diamond.

Finding themselves in an elimination game for the second straight day, this time against 2013 Atlantic Sun regular season champion and No. 1 North Florida (42-14, 18-6 A-Sun), the No. 3 FGCU softball team (36-18, 16-7 A-Sun) suffered a, 2-1, defeat in the bottom of the seventh inning in their matchup with the Ospreys on Friday afternoon at Draper Diamond.

After surviving an elimination game on Thursday afternoon against No. 5 Kennesaw State, the No. 3 FGCU softball team (36-17, 16-7 A-Sun) will look extend its stay at the 2013 Atlantic Sun Softball Championship when it takes on No. 1 North Florida (41-14, 18-6 A-Sun) on Friday, May 10 at 4:00 p.m. EST at Draper Diamond.

With its backs against the wall in day two of the 2013 Atlantic Sun Championship, the No. 3 FGCU softball team (36-17, 16-7 A-Sun) collected a walk-off win over No. 5 Kennesaw State in the first elimination game of the double-elimination tournament on Thursday afternoon at Draper Diamond.

In the first game of the 2013 Atlantic Sun tournament, the No. 3 FGCU softball team (35-17, 16-7 A-Sun) fell, 14-6, to in-state rival and No. 6 Stetson in it’s A-Sun tournament opener on Wednesday afternoon at Draper Diamond, home of the Lipscomb Bisons.

Regular season championships in soccer, volleyball and basketball helped Florida Gulf Coast University claim the 2012-13 Atlantic Sun Conference Women’s All-Sports championship.
