Naples, FL – The FGCU softball team split with defending national runner up Grand Valley State University tonight. The second game marked the biggest win in school history as the Lakers are ranked 3rd in the nation for NCAA II. In the first game, GVSU pitcher Jennifer Mackson was dominant as she went the distance while only surrendering three hits. Mackson, a NFCA First Team All-American last season, struck out 7 on the night to pick up her first win of the season. Ashley Cecil, Kristy Ringler, and Kate Fishburn tallied the only hits of the night for the Eagles. Jennifer Goldschmeding, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI, led GVSU. FGCU starting pitcher Nicole Wehrner picked up her first loss of the season (5-1). Wehrner looked good early, but had a rough sixth inning, as she gave up 5 runs. In the second game, the Eagles proved they can compete with the best as they pulled the biggest win in school history upsetting the Lakers 2-0. Christine Beck pitched a complete game, going 7 innings, surrendering 7 hits, and striking out 1. The Eagles played solid team defense to back up Beck. Natasha Meyer and Kate Fishburn played their best defensive games of the year as Meyer turned two clutch double plays late in the game. The Eagles outfield was solid as Ashley Cecil and Erin Ogden combined for five putouts. Offensively, Cecil and Ogden led the Eagles. Cecil went 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored, and Ogden went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI. The Eagles are now 7-5 on the season and will play Salem International tomorrow morning at the Lee County Sports Complex. First pitch is 11 a.m.
