Eagles lose to Saginaw Valley State 9-7
Fort Myers, FL – The FGCU softball team dug themselves a ditch early and couldn’t get out as Saginaw Valley State defeated the Eagles 9-7.
SVSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, but the Eagles answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-2.
SVSU scored a run in the top of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead, and then scored a run in the top of the sixth to take a 6-2 lead before the Eagles finally woke their bats up in the bottom of the sixth.
Kelly Morgan and Adrienne Cicirello singled to start the sixth, and Ashley Cecil came up with a clutch triple, which scored Morgan and Cicirello.
Cecil, who carried the Eagles today offensively, ended up going 3-for-5 with 3 RBI’s.
Perhaps the biggest problem all game was stranding runner on base as the Eagles left 9 base runners on to end innings.
SVSU scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 9-4 lead that seemed to break the Eagles backs, but they stormed back in the bottom of the seventh, and nearly came back.
After back-to-back singles from Christine Beck and Kelly Morgan, Kate Fishburn stepped and hit a single to load the bases.
Adrienne Cicirello, who has been clutch at time this season hit a pop fly that was dropped by the right fielder, and the Eagles scored 2 runs to narrow the lead to 9-7. Cicirello advanced to second base.
Ashley Cecil came to the plate and represented the tying run, but came up short as she lined out to the second basemen.
Kelly Morgan went 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored and Christine Beck went 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored to lead the Eagles as well.
Adrienne Cicirello went 1-for-3, but had 3 RBI’s in the loss.
The Eagles (9-8) will play Salem International Tuesday afternoon at the Lee County Sports Complex at 1 p.m.
