FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior pitcher Kelly Powe tossed a no-hitter in the first game to spark Florida Gulf Coast to a doubleheader sweep of Palm Beach Atlantic University in a Division II softball doubleheader here Saturday. Powe (Naples, FL) went seven innings without allowing a run while striking out eight in a 5-0 win in the season opener for the Eagles. Only a hit batter in the sixth inning prevented her from a perfect game. The Eagles completed the sweep with a 10-3 win in the nightcap. FGCU generated all the offense they would need for Powe with two runs in the third, keyed by an RBI single by senior center fielder Ashley Cecil (Naples, FL). The Eagles added one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to cement the win. Powe becomes the first player from FGCU to toss a no-hitter. She tossed a one-hitter last spring against Palm Beach Atlantic. Cecil led the Eagles seven-hit attack by going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and four stolen bases. Senior second baseman Kristy Ringler (Labelle, FL) added a pair of RBI. The Eagles offense produced 10 runs and 13 hits in game two. Cecil led the way with a 4-for-4 effort, while senior DH Blaire Tolman (Lehigh Acres, FL) had three hits and four RBI. Sophomore Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, FL) chipped in with a pair of singles as the Eagles overcame an early 3-1 deficit. The Sailfish (0-4) got on the board first in the second game, taking advantage of a pair of fielding miscues to build a 3-1 lead. FGCU plated three in third and five in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Junior transfer Amanda Bechtoldt (New Baden, IL) picked up her first win as an Eagle in relief of sophomore Jessica Brinkman, who was making her first career appearance in the circle for the Eagles. Bechtoldt pitched hitless ball for the final four innings for the win. The Eagles (2-0) host Lynn University in a doubleheader Tuesday night beginning at 5 p.m. at the FGCU Softball Complex.
