FGCU Softball Splits Doubleheader with Lynn
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast University and Lynn University split a Division II South Region doubleheader Tuesday night with FGCU winning the opener, 2–1, and Lynn taking nightcap, 9-2, at the FGCU Softball Complex.
Senior right-hander Kelly Powe (Naples, Fla.) allowed just four hits in a complete game win in the opener, improving to 2-0 in the circle this season. Powe struck out eight while allowing just one walk.
The Eagles scored the game-winner in dramatic fashion in the seventh. Sophomore catcher Lauren Donnelly (Jacksonville, Fla.), who led the inning off with a single, scored on a two-out error. FGCU was held to three hits by Knights starter Aimee Murch (4-1), who struck out nine.
Senior center fielder Ashley Cecil (Naples, Fla.), and junior shortstop Christine Beck (Hudson, Fla.) each had singles for the Eagles.
Lynn (8-1)had 10 hits and took advantage of four FGCU errors to win the nightcap. Third baseman Tiffani King went 2-fo-4 with a grand slam and four RBI, while catcher Christina Rolla was 2-for-3 with a RBI and right-fielder Becca McNerney was 2-for-3.
Knights starter Rachel Foster held the Eagles to four hits to improve to 4-0. FGCU sophomore Jessica Brinkman (0-1) allowed six hits and three runs, one earned, in four innings to take the loss.
Designated hitter Blaire Tolman (Lehigh Acres, Fla.), freshman Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, Fla.) and junior Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, Fla.) had hits for the Eagles.
FGCU (3-1) travels to Saint Leo for a doubleheader on Saturday.
