FGCU Softball Drops Two to Saint Leo
SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo University rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game of a doubleheader to complete a sweep of Florida Gulf Coast University in softball action Saturday.
The Lions (9-0) remained undefeated after winning the opener 4-1 and taking the nightcap 3-2.
Trailing 1-0 entering the seventh inning in the nightcap, FGCU scored a pair of unearned runs to take a 2-1 lead. Senior second baseman Kristy Ringler (Labelle, Fla.) worked a lead off walk and stole second. Senior designated hitter Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) followed with a bunt single, the only Eagles hit in the game, to advance Ringler to third. A two-run throwing error by third baseman Monique Dominguez gave FGCU a 2-1 lead.
The Lions rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the win. Center fielder Ashley Black greeted Eagles reliever Kelly Powe (Naples, Fla.) with a two-out RBI triple, scoring the winning run on the play after the throw to third eluded third baseman Natasha Meyers (Coral Springs, Fla.).
Lions pitcher Katie Heintz, who has not give up an earned run in 35 innings this year, pitched a complete game one-hitter to improve to 5-0. Powe fell to 2-2.
In the opener, four FGCU miscues aided Saint Leo in scoring two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth for a 4-1 win. Lions starter Ringler. Starter Heather Gamlin pitched six innings allowing four hits, five walks and one run before Heintz came on to pick up her second save.
Senior second baseman Kristy Ringler (Labelle, Fla.) went 3-for-4 to lead the Eagles.
FGCU (3-3) will play a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at the University of Tampa.
